@Micke In this case I actually think that the hashtag must 'exist' on your instance before you can add it. Likely it's enough that somebody on the instance uses it.

If you want to try out the advanced web interface for Mastodon, I made short video on how to pin a hashtag search.
1. In Preferences, Enable advanced web interface and save.
2. Go Back to your Mastodon start page.
3. Search for #FediTips
4. Click search result
5. In the column that appears, open column settings (top right icon)
6. Select “Pin” and the column will stay in your layout and update automatically
7. You can add more hashtags to the same column, if you want.
Om du i Settings > Preferences > Appearance aktiverar "Advanced web interface" kan du i webbgränssnittet få upp och lägga till kolumner.
Sök på en hashtag för att få upp den i en kolumn. Välj sedan inställnings-ikonen för den kolumnen (högst upp till höger).
Då fälls en meny ut och du kan välja “Pin”. Den fastnar då som en kolumn som uppdateras.
Du kan dessutom lägga till fler hashtags i den kolumnen om du vill.

⚠️ Mastodon admin question
@harrybr There aren’t that many relays to connect to to be honest. One benefit would be to fill your federated timeline with stuff before you follow people. As a host of a single-user instance myself I feel I’ve been better off curating by just following.
It would also put more load on your server 😉

I have planned a newsletter for this day.
And no, I won’t offer yet another hot take on social media dumpster fires.
I want to offer concrete advice for becoming more resilient online.
Platforms will come and go. How can you maintain stability through it all?
Subscribe to email issues on my blog. Or use RSS. Or just keep an eye out for the web version being posted.
Microblog is not open source software I can download for free and install on any server. It’s a paid service. So that makes it different.

In the early days of course it wasn’t called a blog. Here in Sweden they just called it “a diary on the net”.
Mastodon gGmbH is a non-profit (only since 2021), but that is not what makes it ”not possible to buy”. The software is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 so any code based on it, or any modifications, have to be made freely available.
I guess a big player can come in and make a big instance and lure people there (easier-to-use, better performance, apps, etc) but they would have to surrender and make available any code changes for free.
Now a billionaire could just refuse and drag things out in court. But Mastodon as we see it would still be open source and free and possible to install for anyone. The community would likely rally to best any improvements.
So there is no way a billionaire can take away the premise of open-source software and our option to use Mastodon for free. But they could use all sorts of tactics to make something else appear more attractive. Some may be seduced.
I’ve not stayed updated on what is happening with Trump’s TRUTH Social, for example. Which is a Mastodon instance.
The fact that it is, however, doesn’t matter to our use of the software. And we don’t even have to be affected by it.

You may be helped by a tool for planning out the number of characters in each post, regardless of what tool or character limit you have.
I made a simple thing. I just call it Thread counter. You are welcome to use it as you wish.
