Apple's proposed surveillance machine has given me a knot in the pit of my stomach. It's a really, really big deal and it's hard to summarize why. I'm glad people like Sarah take the time to compose threads like this one. Support @OpenPriv if you can. x.com/SarahJamieLewi…

Related to engineering incriminating photos onto another person's phone, I wrote 2 years ago about how immigrants are being denied entry due to contents of their photo library. In several cases the photos ended up there through WhatsApp groups.

The full front page of Sweden’s daily newspaper @SvD today is an ad from The Swedish Armed Forces.

Translated: “A FLAG WORTH DEFENDING. We defend human rights, everyone’s equal worth and our right to live as we ourselves choose.”

The Swedish Armed Forces have been consistent with this messaging for years now.

Their 2017 tweet:

“We are prepared to go the full distance. Your right to live how you want, as who you want, with whoever you want – is our task to defend.”

Message: “SOME THINGS SHOULDN’T HAVE TO BE CAMOUFLAGED. Equality is an important ingredient in a democracy. In the armed forces we treat each other with respect and see each others’ differences as a strength. ->

-> We are an inclusive organisation where everyone who contributes to our operations are to feel welcome and respected.” x.com/svenskaffische…

This was the full front page ad from the Swedish Armed Forces in 2019.

Message: “IN DEFENSE OF LOVE. Your right to be who you are, live how you please with the one you yourself choose – is our task to defend.”

English translation of today’s full page ad by Swedish Armed Forces.

Full-page ad from Swedish Armed Forces on International Women’s Day 2021. “Typiskt tjejer!” is a Swedish exclamation, roughly translating to “That’s so typical for girl behavior.” Usually derogatory.

Text: "Doing drills and operations, quick decision-making in demanding —>

--> situations and leading others. Typical girl and boy stuff. A placement with us works equally well regardless of gender. But today we are far too few women, which is why we actively work for more to seek us out. Everyone is needed in a strong defense.”

OUR STRENGTH CONSISTS OF DIFFERENCES. July 30, 2020.

More from International Women’s Day over the years.

2018: We are overmanned.
2019: We aren’t backing down.
2020: May the best man be a woman (play with the words ‘kvinna’ (woman) and ‘vinna’ (win).
2021: Typical for girls OR “Just like a girl”.

“Come as you are. Let us challenge your perception of who is a good fit for the armed forces.”

2019 campaign.
