There are few things in my career I am as proud of as implementing and teaching the Ethics in Design course. It's a 3-week course at Nackademin, part of a two year vocational program to become a UX Designer. Very few educational programmes take ethics seriously, and this one has decided to do so in a really big way.
If you want to employ UX Designers who are well-versed in reflective reasoning, documentation and visualizing insights around well-being and impact of products and services, you want to be looking in this direction.
Huge thank you to all guest speakers who not only bring important puzzle pieces for understanding the wide spectrum of responsibilites as a designer, but also help illustrate that this is a significant focus area for many designers today. One that is, thankfully, becoming ever harder to ignore.
"A Dutch court has ordered the immediate halt of an automated surveillance system for detecting welfare fraud because it violates human rights, in a judgment likely to resonate well beyond the Netherlands.
The case was seen as an important legal challenge to the controversial but growing use by governments around the world of artificial intelligence (AI) and risk modelling in administering welfare benefits and other core services."
”For many products and services, we can’t pick a set of metrics at the outset and say, “Ok, that’s how we’ll always measure success.” If we do that, we’ll lock ourselves into a simplified notion of success. That’s how we unintentionally leave a door open for competitors to steal our business from us.
Our metrics need to grow as our understanding of our users grows. And with every growth spurt, we’ll become one step closer to a design-mature organization.”

Sorry to have to point this out, but the joking and ensuing laughter about epilepsy in the beginning of this video is honestly very off-putting. "Anyone that suffers epilepsy, please leave the building. Anyone that doesn't know they suffer from it, too bad."
A corporate culture of having a laugh about neurological disorders is not one that invites diversity and inclusive thinking.

– Questions to ask organizers
”If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said less horseshit.”
Whatever Henry Ford may or may not have said, there is no evidence he ever said anything about faster horses. And his contribution to human transportation is not about inventing cars (he didn’t) but about freezing the design of the Model T and adapting assembly lines to cars. This brought down prices significantly and brought cars to more people. His insistence on sticking with this strategy is what in the end made him lose most of Ford’s market share to General Motors. This was an example of his refusal to continuously test his vision against reality.
People didn’t want faster horses, they wanted ”better cars, with better financing options”.
When a smooth-talking advisor brings you the quote about faster horses to make their point, please do feel free to question it. And make time to have a conversation about whatever point they’re making. Because, like most quotes, it simplifies a problem space (which people love) and alludes to an air of wisdom (not always warranted), and can be either made up, misattributed or dangerously out of context.
Choose your quotes with care.

”Within America’s own representative democracy, citizens would surely rise up in outrage if the government attempted to mandate that every person above the age of 12 carry a tracking device that revealed their location 24 hours a day. Yet, in the decade since Apple’s App Store was created, Americans have, app by app, consented to just such a system run by private companies. Now, as the decade ends, tens of millions of Americans, including many children, find themselves carrying spies in their pockets during the day and leaving them beside their beds at night — even though the corporations that control their data are far less accountable than the government would be.”

In the left image the Swedish artist Karl Jilg illustrates the risks of unprotected road users where cars and humans are mixed. Humans have a hard time understanding risk of speed but understand risks of height more easily.
In the right image I have added the types of obstacles that pedestrians further have to struggle with in modern day (carelessly parked e-scooters). There are also two individuals added, bringing to attention that this space is shared with people with mobility and visual constraints... by extension of course also people with auditory and sensory constraints. These people are further put in harms way by modern obstacles in their path.
Please, let's be more responsible with the little safe space we have in city traffic.
On Sunday the first issue of 🐼 Pandamonium (re-booted) will be sent out to more than 2,000 subscribers. If you're curious, this is where you may sign up: https://axbom.eu/pandamonium/
Also, if you'd be interested in sponsoring an issue of Pandamonium, let's talk.
This is one of the many places where you can find UX Podcast, and the growth on Spotify since last year is kinda crazy.
Obligatorisk lyssning.
Do you subscribe to interesting newsletters that you never get around to reading? Do they always seem to arrive at the worst time and then just slide out of memory?
If you had an app specifically for newsletters you might actually get the benefit you wanted from those thought-provoking periodicals.
There are more mindful ways to subscribe to newsletters. These are three of them:
The extended, transcribed version of my presentation at Internetdagarna last week is now available in English.
Rowenna Fielding just granted me this review on Twitter: ”If you only have time to read one thing today, please make it this. History lesson, design tutorial, call to arms - it’s all here. Read it. Then go do it.” 🙏
