The poetry of this video is extraordinary.
”Tesla Cybertruck. Brought to you by paying a sex worker to watch you play Helldivers. There is no room for automotive journalism with Tesla anymore. I’ve watched a revolutionary automaker transform from a plucky underdog to an oppressive corpo jingoist within the span of only 10 years. The hair-plugged and TRT-injected owner bought Twitter, turned it into a bot and Russian provocateur cesspool and then sucked up to Immortan Joe and was rewarded with his own government agency where he and his hangers-on can play pretend cops.”
”Now he exists as a vitamin D deficient blob rambling into rogue microphones unable to answer even slow pitch softball questions. The people surrounding him are equally devoid of moral compasses, driven only by opportunity and manipulation. Each of his advisers have IV needles buried deep into his spine, sucking what clout, marrow and connections are left in his anterior pelvic tilted skeleton. And the Cybertruck is his latest, and for all we know, his last creation. A rotten geometric slab of cruel freeway oppression driven by people who, as children, spent every recess standing right next to the teacher.”

In case you’re not familiar with Immortan Joe, this is a good explainer:

Voting matters.
"FESTUS, Missouri — Voters in a small Missouri town, unhappy with the city council’s approval of a $6 billion data center, struck back at the polls last week, ousting all four incumbent council members running for reelection.
Tuesday’s election in Festus, Missouri — a city of 12,000 people along the Mississippi River a half-hour south of St. Louis — is the latest example of growing public backlash against cities agreeing to host hyperscale data centers over the objections of residents concerned about their local impacts."

"The thing about collaborators is that you don’t know you are one whereas as a member of the resistance, you do. [In WWII,] the worst cases of collaboration weren’t among the real collaborators, that official militia, but among the people at large, who were collaborators without knowing it, by a sort of laxity, an apathy."
— Paul Virilio, Pure War (2008), p. 183
”For 14 days, participants used a commercially available app, Freedom, to block internet access on their phones. They were still allowed calls and text messages, essentially turning a smartphone into a dumb phone.
Their time online decreased from 314 minutes to 161 minutes, and by the end of the period the participants had improvements in sustained attention, mental health as well as self-reported well-being.
The improvement in sustained attention was about the same magnitude as 10 years of age-related decline, the researchers noted, and the effect of the intervention on depression symptoms was larger than antidepressants and similar to that of cognitive behavioral therapy.
But two things were even more mind-blowing to Castelo and Kushlev, a co-author of the study: Even those people who cheated and broke the rules after a few days seemed to have positive effects from the break; and in follow-up reports after the two weeks, many people reported the positive effects lingered.
’So you don’t have to necessarily restrict yourself forever. Even taking a partial digital detox, even for a few days, seems to work,’ Kushlev said.”

@osma @Adam Yes, Signal does not pass any message content through Apple servers. What's happening here is that notifications are stored locally on the phone, and if those notifications are set to display name and content they will be retrievable from local storage on the phone. Digging into this now but it seems the notifications are stored locally for 30 days (no idea about guarantees of deletion after that).
And of course even if you yourself have previews turned off in your notifications, the people you are sending messages to may not.
Meredith Whittaker addressed this in December 2023, saying “push notifications simply act as a ping that tells the app to wake up. They don't reveal who sent the message or who is calling (not to Apple, Google, or anyone). Notifications are processed entirely on your device. This is different from many other apps.”

@ScottMGS Really makes you wonder if anything you don't want public should be sent using these phones.
@beanface42 Any app really, as I understand it, it's a database over all notifications. 😳
If you have Signal on an iPhone what you want to do is deactivate previews in your notifications. This essentially means you can still get notifications but you can't read the text inside the notification, you need to open Signal to read the message.
This setting is good advice for ALL NOTIFICATIONS. Without it people can read messages on your screen. And if you don't set Show Previews to “Never”, these messages apparently are stored in a freakin' database on the phone.

Just spent an hour on a new macbook pro trying to understand why tabbing wasn't working on a website – it wasn't recognizing links. Turns out it's turned off by default on Safari 🤯
Mind blown. You have to turn it on in Settings -> Advanced inside Safari.

@jon_bon Bra!
Was there ever a follow-up look into how Truth Social continues using Mastodon without releasing any code?

Your regular reminder that Sam Altman's company Worldcoin, that is now rebranded to just 'World', is still going strong and scanning people's eyeballs in exchange for crypto in an effort to create an identity database with a stored biometric code for all humans in the world.
It's still terrifying, and very few talk about it.

I was moved by the singing in sign language scene from Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. As the music started I thought ”oh no they’re gonna make Abigail (a deaf woman) sing, that’s not good” but then she sang in ASL. Powerful. 🙏❤️ The song is ”Fight Song” by Rachel Platten. And the actress playing Abigail is Sandra Mae Frank, who I’ve now learnt is deaf and is someone I should be more aware of. I’ve added The Silent Hour to my watch list.
Yes, I’m late to the game watching this show but I’m really enjoying it.
There are still some aspects that did not play out well in this episode, which have to do with the ”inspiration porn” trap. The issues are described well in this post by Esme Mazzeo: https://telltaletv.com/2020/04/zoeys-extraordinary-playlist-review-zoeys-extraordinary-silence-season-1-episode-9/
The episode is S01:E09 Zoey’s Extraordinary Silence.
