@wheelyweb This is in fact exactly the type of reflection I"m after, but it was interesting to see how many interpreted it as one technical tool replacing another rather than the human need it fulfilled and "made better".

For me it's the same question. On a high level I think of it as a tradeoff between intimacy and the perceived value of efficiently maintaining as many relationships as possible.

@Fabien_UX Similar for me. Though I did find many contacts online before FB (via search engines and school alumni sites). So I'm not sure I would be as categorical as to say I would _never_ have heard from them without FB specifically.
@Fabien_UX Without FB I am now running a newsletter for family and close friends. For me, it has added to the level of intimacy with the people who matter most to me.

@MarMurube I'm not sure FB replaced any of these for me. Instead it added immensely to the number of people I was in contact with, giving me a sense of efficiency and illusion of value. In some ways it replaced intimacy.
I know it did replace hours of reading books for me.
I believe the most important question for people asking what they can replace Facebook with is this: what did Facebook replace?
And work from there.
Many of you went straight for the digital tool when thinking about the answer to this. For millions of people there was no digital tool prior to Facebook. I'd consider the human needs, relationships and activities that the tool replaced. What is better, what is lost.
Sometimes we can replace one activity that is damaging to our wellbeing with a completely different activity. Sometimes we find ourselves too dependent and need help to break loose. Sometimes we have to summon energy to fight. Everyone's situation is different.
I'm not a 'prepper' yet but stacking firewood in anticipation of winter is hugely satisfying.

My hope was that more techbros outside this gang get the sense to stop what they're doing. But realising now they only see how they can get a 'get-out-of-jail-free' card by 'post-confessing'.

I agree with the criticisms of these men not demonstrating a sound understanding of their own responsibilities or the inequality and oppression they keep perpetuating. I'm thinking they can still offer some insights on the internal thought-processes.

@jessicamalonso True, it's extremely common for me to recommend services only to hear people groan when they realise these are paid services. The expectancy that companies not be paid by customers feels like the new norm.
