@TerryHancock Sure, that part I agree with. But with other paid services I cancel I either get to continue until the end of the period I've paid for, and THEN all the data gets deleted, or I get a refund for the remaining period.
The devious part here is that many will try to maximise the time they get for what they paid and risk missing canceling, which triggers another yearly payment.
@joho I've been very happy with Ghost as a platform. Moving to it really boosted the frequency of my writing and I've spent far less time worrying about the tool specifics (like I did with Wordpress which I feel is no longer a true blogging tool). Also love how fast and responsive it is. Now I'm self-hosting Ghost, so just saving a lot of money :)
We'll see what I think about Ghost 5.0 😬
I did not expect this from Ghost(Pro) but if I cancel my subscription everything gets deleted immediately. Even if I've paid for 6 more months, the site will NOT stay up until the next billing cycle. And no refunds, despite this action.
What a devious policy. 🤔
But yeah, I'm pushing the buttons.

@malte This is true. It’s often easier to understand when I ask someone what they think happens when they email someone with a gmail address :)
Is there a way of truly knowing how well anyone will handle requests from law enforcement in the future? I tend to still believe that from an activist perspective any 3rd party hosted email for communication will always be a risky idea. 🧐
Very much agree that the pr/info around ”private/encrypted email” could be much better.
@malte I very much like your points. Makes me want to write more about how encryption does not mean what people think it means. Thinking now of screen grabbers that can just copy what’s on any screen. Or keyloggers. As soon as it’s digital… how safe can any information really be?
@malte Thanks for highlighting this. For anyone reading the thread this is the story: https://cybernews.com/news/protonmail-shared-activist-s-ip-with-law-enforcement-claims-had-no-other-choice/
I suppose one could say the activist perspective is to avoid third-party email altogether. From a data mining perspective I would suggest the world is better off if people move away from big tech’s profilers to ones that have little interest in profiling them for monetary gain.
But yes, indie email/messaging for everyone would be the dream.
Exciting times. Rooting for Proton here (prev. Proton Mail).
”The company will now offer an “ecosystem” of linked products, all accessed via one paid subscription. Proton subscribers will have access not just to encrypted email, but also an encrypted calendar, file storage platform, and VPN.”
Good interview with Proton CEO Andy Yen.
A mainstream e-mail service with a real privacy focus. And yes, there is still a free tier for email.
Just so very excited about the new season of #StrangerThings dropping tomorrow. 🤗
@pete Pretty much. And for specific settings I still have access to everything through the terminal. https://docs.cloudron.io/security/
@ScottMGS Oh wow thank you. I love learning these new terms that help me find more likeminded people and thoughtful reflections. 🙏
@LeoR1010@mastodon.social Satt också och åt helgfrukost och tänkte att det var väl självklart, tills jag kom på att det är torsdag 😅
In my case, one way of getting to know me is through my writing, tools and worksheets. Starting this thread to share some key blog posts and perhaps some other tidbits I’ve produced thoughout the years.
First out is The Elements of Digital Ethics, which sets the tone. A chart to help guide moral considerations in the tech space.
In early 2022 I did a talk on AI and Human Rights hosted by Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI). My blog post has a full transcript, so you can choose to watch or read it, whatever works best for you. All the slides are available in this post as well.
(Good to know: The transcript has a paragraph I forgot to include when speaking about ”The Many Actors”)
The first talk I did on design ethics in English was at the UXLx conference
(User Experience Lisbon) in May 2016. I received such overwhelming positive feedback it felt like the start of something new for me. It was.❤️
The Invisible Problem with Fairytale Experiences.
This talk was an English blog post (based on a Swedish talk) before I took it to Lisbon. That original text is also linked from this post.
Since my first early talks on design ethics my output has progressed to more often encompass a much broader perspective on universal wellbeing. Here’s a post describing what I mean when I say universal wellbeing.

I’ve written a fair number of articles related to the #fediverse now. You can find them all (and future ones) via the fediverse tag on my blog.
Everything from guides and tips to reflections around why I left ”recommendation media” and my thoughts on #indieweb and online resilience.

Many in design are familiar with The Double Diamond. In this post I introduce The Trouble Diamond, encouraging digital creators to acknowledge the many weaknesses in design processes.
"It serves no one well to promote the idea that enough research has been done, that everything from that research has been understood, that there are no communication issues when building new stuff and that we are not actively excluding people when design choices are made."
@pete Thanks. No troubles at all. But I’m also ”cheating” and using Cloudron to help me install the app and keep it updated. :)
@Sandra This sounds really good. I have to try Tomboy-ng now
⚠️ Mass shootings
I don’t like to talk about these happenings but I sometimes I also think we have to.
The point I want to emphasise again today is from my post in 2019: assuming that shooters are mentally ill can be stigmatising and dangerous. The facts tell a different story.
The harmful myth of mentally ill shooters in the USA

Have now started up my own server (VPS) and moved both my Mastodon accounts here, two Ghost blogs and also created a Pixelfed instance for my cartoon. Having loads of fun with this actually! And feeling empowered.
@wildexploits will post here and on https://pix.xbm.se/wildexploits
@helenaroth 😊 Should have worked yesterday. I just migrated this morning.
Migrating my account to my own VPS, which means that my instance name just slightly changed (3 letters shorter 😅). Follows and Followers are intact.
My old posts will live on for a couple months at their old permalinks.
