I’ve long thought about making an online course around the topics I teach and work with. But I always hesitate when it comes to topic… and whether or not someone would be willing to spend money on it.
Rather than accessibility, ux or digital ethics I’m now thinking that something along the lines of ”start a blog/podcast” or ”protect your online accounts” would bring the most value.
I imagine something practical that one can get going with right away makes sense as a self-learning tutorial. For theoretical education I want to be more present as guide and coach.
Of course as I’m writing I’m immediately seeing the obvious buzzword as the likely answer to my hesitations… hybrid.

Had this conversation (yet again, sigh) with a client earlier this morning. This person being someone who understood though:
We won't make any progress if all these projects keep building first and then start thinking about accessibility later on. Accessibility has to be front and center. Otherwise you did not build a usable thing at all, and you likely will have to redo stuff to improve it and you won't because you'll claim resources are depleted by then and you'll start loving the excuse "come on, it works for most people".
And the appeal for help... "we built this thing, can someone help us make it accessible please (for free please)" sounds at first like a friendly voice but also says a lot about how low of a priority accessibility has been up until then and likely will continue to be.
Sorry, just needed to get this out of my system… People could very well be the nicest of persons and have the best of intent, but WCAG 1.0 came out in 1999. That's now 24 years ago. WCAG 2.0 in 2008. If you build stuff for the web, why are you deciding to ignore all this vast amount of knowledge that is available for free?

Gah. I just finished writing my first "assignment" for my uni course and went into the website discussion board to submit it. It is essentially an introduction of myself, why I chose the course and commentary on an article of my choice.
This one's supposed to be published in the forum so everyone can see it. So I can see everyone else's that have already been submitted. What I've written is about 10 times(!) as long as what everyone else has written.
What do I do? Cut down / Submit anyway / Publish as a blog post and submit just three paragraphs of it?
Did not see this coming… 😬
And no, there is no specification of expected length.
Some great advice in this thread. Thank you. In the end I have now shortened it to about 40% of its original length. It's better. I just want to avoid being "that guy". But I suppose it's inevitable.

Ah, det ringer en klocka om att jag kan ha läst något sådant. Får forska lite i det, men känns som det ska mycket till att man ska blocka en mjukvara rakt av baserat på att det finns några rötägg som använder den.

Hmm, har inte hört att det finns tydliga gränser för att vissa inte federerar med just Pleroma?
Men ja, Akkoma är ju en fork av Pleroma. Lite snabbare och smidigare. Jag gillar själv kontrollen över antal tecken, skriva HTML och markdown, samt kanske framför allt trådningen. Mastodon hanterar ju knappt trådning, men Akkoma läser in alla svar i en tråd och visar hierarkin dem emellan. Svårare att missa något.
Är väldigt förtjust i gränssnittet för egen del. Lite missar i tillgänglighet (kontraster och så) men man kan också designa ett eget gränssnitt vilket är trevligt.

Oklart, haha. Har inte hittat en inställning som motsvarar den Mastodon har. Verkar snarare gå på webbläsarens språk. Men engelska är nog default, även om jag satt att instansen ska hantera engelska och svenska (har inte listat ut vad den inställningen gör ännu).
Gissar att mina inlägg här hamnar på svenska för dig då Mastodon tycker det baserat på att jag svarar på ett svenskt inlägg.
