Alastair nails it yet again. You can not draw deciding conclusions about usage from a desire path photo alone. But you know you really, really want to.
What you can do is form a hypothesis. x.com/acuity_design/…
↪ Replying to @jessalyn
@jessalyn I was in Almedalen last year and came 5 feet away from a police/nazi confrontation. The nazi stuck a SLR camera in their faces, taking pictures of them and laughing. Very intense. This was moments after they had tipped over the holocaust memorial pieces.
@jessalyn This nazi was a suspect but it blew my mind that he seemed untouchable. They couldn’t take his camera, merely inform that he was requested to be heard at the police station. In the end the police officers were made uncomfortable by having their pictures taken.
@jessalyn The system is broken and dangerous when police are this helpless in confrontation with a known nazi. The designated force for good is toothless and that is something that needs to be changed soon as citizens are experiencing more fear. If not, it can only spin out of control.
How is this not being stopped? In Sweden nazis are demonstrating in the towns of Boden and Ludvika on May 1. Likely elsewhere as well.

The new Turing Test is to tickle people. If they don’t respond they are non-human. I call it the Tickle Test.
Try it today.
↪ Replying to @alissadesigns
@alissadesigns You’re right. I’m suggesting here that working as a team with people who have similar skills to yourself is different from working with teams where there are many different backgrounds and skill sets.
@alissadesigns For example: should I as a designer make a prototype that I hand over to a dev or should I sit next to the developer and have a conversation that allows them to build the prototype. The latter is hugely beneficial in my opinion but hard to teach in school.
A. My experience: Inter-disciplinary cooperation and teamwork is vital to project success.
B. My observation: Vocational education teaches how to do produce stuff that is handed over to someone with a different profession
C. My question: How do people best move from B to A?
The problem with “Allow X to access your location while using the app?” is that it lacks info on how this info is managed, stored and shared. Thus it is impossible for me to make an informed decision.
This could easily be improved with #ContextualDisclosure.

And no, “To provide you with a better service” is not a frickin’ acceptable explanation.

↪ Replying to @DougCollinsUX
@DougCollinsUX @whatusersdo My thinking: The first step down an unethical path is the most important one to avoid. Once you’re only ”95% ethical” the step is fast to ”70% ethical” because who can really tell the difference... and by then it’s so profitable you can’t possibly go back.
@DougCollinsUX @whatusersdo But also, you are then on your way to destroying your business, even if that can take years, you ruin many lives on the way, become a billionaire and buy all your neighbors’ houses to stay private.
Stuck with a company full of unethical employees who will gladly steal from you.
↪ Replying to @DougCollinsUX
@DougCollinsUX @whatusersdo I agree with you in practice. ;) My statement was bold, but alludes to how I think we can spark these conversations in our organizations. Most businesses start on this premise and then go rogue, because reasons.
↪ Replying to @betterux_
@whatusersdo @DougCollinsUX 1) Anticipate conflict
2) Practice responding to arguments (pre-scripting)
3) Explain how the business can suffer from the wrong choice
4) Suggest alternative design paths
I also question the validity of the question as economics is based on win-win. Without users, no business.
↪ Replying to @ojmqd
@ojmqd @karenbachmann @DougCollinsUX @whatusersdo If our profession is built on the premise of human-centric design I believe it is in the interest of protecting the validity of the profession to own up when people are harmed.
How many work days do you think it would require to read all the updated privacy policies that are being sent out this month?

@jgthms Do you maybe have a quick best-practice tip for adding the text "Menu" on the left side of the hamburger menu on mobile, using Bulma? :) Thanks.
So where is the private chat forum for people who need to ventilate about #AvengersInfinityWar?
I'm ready to start a Telegram group if that's what it takes and I get a show of interested hands. I'll name it MarvelTalk: Spoilers Galore.
Many of us spend a lot of time trying to live up to our perception (true or not) of other people’s expectations.
The best gift you can give yourself is time to figure out your own values and goals. The best gift you can receive is someone who listens without judgment.
I try writing a chapter explaining how we have become absolutely awesome at building the wrong things, and then Alan just sums it up so eloquently the way only he can. x.com/mralancooper/s…
