I know Clubhouse has its shortcomings, and I've talked about many of them, but Clubhouse has also introduced me to so many people w visual impairments I have been honored to learn from.

@stendec6 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimate seat belts save more than 11,000 lives each year. By looking at a representative number of accidents, and fatality rates with and without seatbelt use, many countries provide this type of data.

@EmilOberg @stephenhay I was born in Liberia :) My father worked for LAMCO (Liberian American-Swedish Mining Company) in the north of Liberia. LAMCO built the Yekepa hospital in the 60s and that is where I saw light of day for the first time.
@EmilOberg @stephenhay Since I write in both English and Swedish I sometimes use the Liberian flag to signify English-language content (it's the official language there too) but I think most people assume it's a symbolic US flag. Happy you noticed :)

The Swedish engineer Nils Bohlin invented the 3-point seatbelt in 1959. In 2002, the year of Bohlin's death, it was estimated the seatbelt had saved more than one million lives. The design was given away for free to competitors, for the benefit of humanity rather than profit.
In 2012 a Swedish researcher, Anna Carlsson, created the first prototype of a crash test dummy with a female body shape. This after it was found that women had a 47% higher chance of suffering serious injuries in car crashes.

62 years after the seatbelt was invented, the safety of women in cars is still not a priority, and dummies with a female body shape are not in general use in tests, despite all the available data showing how a higher percentage of women die / are injured.
