@troed The distinction I’m making is that simply choosing a solution that is geographically closer does not ensure that the solution provider will act in your favor while they control access (I’m seeing many takes saying that choosing European tools is the answer for example, but that only minimises some aspects of risk, far from all of it). I’m simultaneously trying to make a general point about becoming dependent on a subscription-based commercially-owned tool for living an autonomous life. I could certainly have been more clear but sometimes I do just throw my thoughts out there :)

In November it will be 30 years since I registered http://axbom.com – do people have parties for domain names? 😅

(Edit: I spoke too soon… it’s in 2027)

Damnit, my bad… it’s 2027. Next year.

Well that certainly gives me more time to plan.

Anthropic disabling #Fable & #Mythos doesn’t teach us to switch to local tech. It teaches us not to over-rely on technology – that someone else controls – for thinking, working, learning or play.

So many getting that lesson wrong.

Speaking of EFF, this is a must-listen interview with Cindy Cohn. She’s been doing quite the podcast tour recently, given that she has a new book out and recently left her role as EFF’s executive director.

Trivia: she has succeeded so well at privacy that Wikipedia doesn’t know which year she was born. It simply states 1964 OR 1965 😅

Always impressed by the front page cartoons of @thecontinent and this is no exception. A perfect illustration of the 2026 World Cup political atmosphere. I really recommend reading the story as well, which includes how huge crowds in Mogadishu gathered to welcome home Omar Abdulkadir Artan, Africa’s top-ranked referee, who was denied entry to the United States despite being part of the official referee staff.

”Fifa itself has not always been passive when host countries put domestic politics over tournament accessibility. The governing body responded to Artan’s denial of entry by saying it is ’not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications’.

But in 2023, when Indonesia objected to Israel’s participation in the Under-20 World Cup, Fifa swiftly stripped the country of hosting rights. This time, however, Infantino has asked football supporters to ’chill, relax’, and trust Fifa, while also admitting the governing body is not being told about decisions affecting its own tournament.”

This part is worth noting as well, because most people are not aware of how many military operations the US carries out on the African continent: ”The US carried out more than 120 military operations in Somalia in 2025, making it one of the most intensive periods of American military activity in the country.”

Get this issue and back issues on The Continent. Yes, it’s free.

Illustration on the front cover of The Continent, a weekly magazine with African journalism. The cartoon shows a birds-eye view of the North American continent, with the United States borders surrounded by castle walls around one football pitch covering the entire country (and inside of the walls) where a football flies high into the air from the center of the pitch. The castle walls have six evenly spaced watchtowers surrounding the country, and each is manned with an ICE agent with a machine gun. The title reads ”Making football political again”.

People who played Pokémon Go trained the navigation tech used for drones in the military.

"Since 2021, Pokémon Go has asked players to record short videos of real-world locations, called Pokéstops, to earn extra in-game items. Scanning all the buildings, streets, and trees in a 360-degree sweep was optional, and Niantic asked separately for permission to keep the footage. Granting it meant agreeing to extra terms."
