Are there are any companies you know of that clearly label themselves as 'Amazon-free' or '[insert platform here]'-free?
Also, 'nudge-free'. That would be an interesting label.
Only "White Girls" and "White Boys" Didn't Return Pornographic Keywords.
This keeps happening, it's gravely serious and still the myth of neutral algorithms lives on. x.com/LeonYin/status…

@jennytheolin Same. Calling myself CEO feels misleading even though it's completely true... probably because others use these terms in weird ways to flex. Freelancer FTW 😊

Just saw one of my previous students question the ethics of a new app in a LI post by the COO. He did the usual "we're just building the app, what people do with it is not our problem" and "how could this possibly be misused". She calmly explained tools for evaluating impact. ❤️
Can't really let this go. The app is an award-winning app, endorsed by governmental bodies, designed to store covid-19 immunity passports to allow more movement for immune people. The reality that an app designed to control civil rights undergoes no ethical evaluations is 🤢.
Also, how can you work with a product like this and also have completely missed all the articles and experts voicing concerns about... yes, the ethics of immunity certificates! Gaah...
"Driving too fast is hardly the concern of the car manufacturer." Yes, his actual argument!
Another argument (yes, really!): "People are different. Someone will always be excluded. How would society look if everyone was the same?"
You now there is rage post about to be written for my blog.

@cklavery Awesome. Translation would be a great next step.
So my latest idea is to take a selection of content from my Ethics in Design course and open-source it as a ready-to-go ethics workshop. Won't be until October I'll have time to do this, but it feels like the obvious way forward.

"It works well for me" or "well, it doesn't hurt me" or "I have nothing to hide" is not good enough when other people are harmed. In fact, those statements will often reveal a great deal about someone's awareness of other people's struggles. Or lack thereof.
