Användare kan överraska om man är villig att bättre förstå deras behov. Bildelningsföretaget Orix förstod inte varför så många hyrde bilar från gatan men aldrig körde dem. I en bransch-enkät till kunderna gavs många olika svar på vad bilarna användes till:
* ta en tupplur
* förvaring av väskor
* kontorsarbete/jobbsamtal
* ladda telefonen
* äta takeaway-mat
* titta på tv
* öva på att sjunga/rappa
Företaget NTT Docomo avslöjar att mer än 10% av deras kunder använder bilarna till något annat än att köra. Frågan blir om man ska motarbeta kunderna eller använda insikterna till affärsutveckling.

Holländska cykelföretaget VanMoof hade problem med skador på de dyra cyklarna under transport. De la till en bild på en TV på sina förpackningslådor och antalet skador föll med 80%. Ibland får man bokstavligen tänka utanför boxen.
