@imdoinfine I've been a long-time user of Overcast and switched to Castro because it felt more intuitive for me with lining up my listening queue. I'd say they're both good and it will be minor details that makes one favor one over the other.

@tashwillcocks I think a big part was the unpreparedness. Given advance notice, and how one can choose pass on it, I think works for most of these shorter “interludes”. A button I can click for “No, thank you” makes the whole difference. Not sure if 4 would make a difference for me.
I attended an event on Digital Ethics today and lasted five minutes. 5 mins into the event we were told we would be randomly paired with a stranger and encouraged to have a 1-1 conversation for five minutes. No way to avoid, because the tech would just “spin and select”. I left.
An activity like that works for some people. Certainly not everyone. Doing it at the top of the agenda in a digital room of 50 unknowns was not respectful to participants. If I just wanted to listen in on the event was no way for me.
Left me ill at ease.

I always feel stupid when I realize I'm doing this. And I'm still doing it as I'm typing this 😅

Again reflecting on how I roamed around in the forest as a kid for hours on end. And today can't leave the phone at home because "what if something happens!?" Or worse, that the kids leave without phones. I sense that fear is a bigger force in my life than I would like to admit.

@jbaldwin @imaginari_es As the article describes, the time before a sound is emitted is 3 days. Plenty of time to follow someone. In an abusive relationship it is unlikely for the target to be away from the abuser for that long. The time period is reset each time the tag’s owner is close to the tag.

@beccanalia True, the concept isn't new. I bring up Tile. But Apple also forces all iPhone owners in the world to be part of the Mesh network. This will likely be more accurate than anything that came before it.

@epenzeymoog @imdoinfine @beantin As I see it, Apple are introducing an additional tracker into the equation which means redundancy for an abuser. They can plant both a Tile and an AirTag to create more "reliable" data.
@epenzeymoog @imdoinfine @beantin The fact they buillt this into the operating system without any ability for me as an iPhone owner to opt out of being part of the mesh network is also concerning.

Apple launched a product aimed at keeping track of your belongings: AirTag. Small round tiles attach to keys, bags and vehicles, allowing you to track them on a map. They also introduce a risk for people who are targets of domestic abuse.

Today I have learned there is no end to the number of people standing at the ready to jump in with: "but people will always use technology to abuse" and willing to leave it at that.
