Getting real about technology…

Modern day marketing strategy where employees are asked to to post support for their company or a colleague on their personal LinkedIn feeds, and then behind the scenes all employees are told to go like that post.

Are we having fun yet? 😬

Imagine being the person called up by your superior, asking why you haven’t liked the latest post by a colleague. And that colleague happens to be someone who is inappropriately flirting with you in direct messages. Liking the post could encourage that behavior…

…and that’s just one way this goes sideways. Spend some time with this problem space and there are many ways this can qualify as abuse of power. Perhaps a discussion topic for the next marketing meeting.

Never thought I’d say this but buying print and tv ads at least didn’t put pressure on employees to act as vehicles for commerce within their own personal spaces.

A dangerous fallacy is that killer robots will take the appearance of monstrous, mechanical machines. Instead, killer robots have (among many other disguises) taken the appearance of web forms automatically determining if people are eligible for financial assistance.

It's nice to not have to be held responsible for a decision that hurts another human being.

I’ll provide links to examples of automated decision-making in my next newsletter, and outline more of the dangers.
