The Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection has recently changed name from ’Datainspektionen’ to

’Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten’.

Yes, one word. Half my time time speaking to journalists now is spent on getting the pronunciation of that name right and hesitating each time. 😅

To complete the picture, here is the same name in three of Sweden's five official minority languages (2 are still undecided):

Finnish: Yksityisyydensuojaviranomainen

Meänkieli: Integriteettisuojaviranomhainen

Yiddish: די שוועדישע אינסטאַנץ פֿאַר אָפּהיטן פּריוואַטקייט

@Acuity_Design This started with me reflecting clinical trial consent, and then reading to understand the levels of consent: simple consent, written consent, informed consent and how the consent also affects close relationships… while it’s mostly framed as an individual, autonomous choice.

@Acuity_Design Consent as a piece of paper with a signature is somewhat distressing.

Slavery
Oppression
Impaired autonomy
Ignored voice
Hurt feelings

These are not equal harms. But sometimes the differences aren’t as clear-cut. That is why ethics is a conversation, not a checklist. Still worth noting that a checklist can assist the conversation.

Also note: these are not siloed harms and everything is subject to second and third order thinking. Ignored voice can lead to oppression can lead to loss of life. This is why strategic foresight, listening and inclusion of voices are all part of applied ethics.

Another one of those words that gets thrown around a lot as an example of harm is ’addiction’. Here are my thoughts on addiction in the tech space:
