I don't like to fight on Twitter, and certainly do avoid insulting phrases. But I do have this red button on my desk in my studio and every once in a while I slam my hand down on it and feel very pleased with myself. In case you're wondering how I stay calm. 😂

Just a note on this one that Twitter's character limit per tweet is 280 and that the apology is 6 tweets in a thread - with no limit on tweets in a thread. Clearly there is no character limit if you are aiming for clarity.

They haven't all been ignored. There are many social scientists working in tech. And in other cases pop-science versions of behavioural insights have been used to actively manipulate and coerce users and stakeholders - applying the bits that make money.

1. This is about caring about vulnerable people and involving them in the design process, not about applying a theoretical ethics framework onto them.
2. Demographics of engineers is part of the problem. Some engineers are obviously better at this.

3. These services are not built by engineers alone. There are often team members concerned with interviews, research and risk assessments. Lack of listening to these people may factor in.
4. "Most engineers I've met" is not a convincing data point.

The use of the word "real" here is disconcerting. And again: it's about involving people who already have the skills and motivation to understand human impact - by in turn involving those affected. In the end, this is a culture problem; skills do exist.

@hondanhon Believe it or not it's been really hot in Sweden today as well =)
Aware of what inhumane practices go on in "humane farming" we need to be wary of terms like "humane tech". I believe we need to judge these organisations by how well they are listening to those being harmed.
