Running a single-user Mastodon instance is really resource intensive (for the server).
Would love to hear about any ideas anyone might have for either streamlining/optimising Mastodon or perhaps another software choice that would be better than Mastodon for a single user, and still allows moving follows/followers... đŹ

Thank you everyone for all your responses. After looking at all the suggestions I believe #Akkoma is closest to what I am looking for.
It would appear bringing followers to another software instance won't work however (only works Mastodon to Mastodon) so I'll mostly be playing around with it for now.
I see now why people have several accounts on different #Fediverse software.

To clarify regarding bringing followers over to other software, Iâm reading in the comments that you can bring followers over to both Akkoma and Calckey. This feature will likely become more common throughout the Fediverse.

Sometimes in work people ask me for sensitive data (personal information) required for contracts and the like.
In these cases I use a pastebin where the server has zero knowledge of data entries. Itâs (en/de)crypted in the browser. I send them a link to a page which expires within a week.
What Iâve learned is that getting the info from me is always described as *urgent*. But after a week people usually email back and ask for the data again because they havenât looked at the page yet. đ

There is so much to learn from older technology.
Pictured is my Remington Standard 12 typewriter from circa 1925, with a Swedish keyboard.
Remington is notable as a brand of typewriter because their first two #typewriters had features that are still in use today on computer keyboards across the world.
Note the text in the brand label: âTo save time is to lengthen life.â

The first of those features that has sustained throughout the decades is the QWERTY keyboard, invented by Christopher Latham Sholes.
The second of those features was added to the Remington no. 2, released in 1880 and later used by Agatha Christie: the SHIFT key.
And yes the tale is true: the QWERTY keyboard was thus designed to solve jamming problems. If you typed too fast the hammers would get stuck on each other.

Some typewriter trivia to throw around: The first mechanical typing machine was invented by italian Pellegrino Turri for his blind friend Countess Carolina Fantoni da Fivizzano so she could write him letters. It's suggested they were love letters.

So it would appear there are like 50 different varieties of book lamps (the ones that attach to books).
What do I need to know or look out for if I want to buy one? Battery or rechargeable? Big lamp? Flexible arm? Weight? Make my own?

@yatil Iâd consider using calendly.com and hooking it up to Stripe. Stripe can be set up to manage taxes automatically these days.
đ My personal concern is that the Fediverse will be a notch more confusing when half of toots can be quote-boosted and half can not. Or quote-boosting actually makes your toot less visible because a lot of people will opt out of seeing them.
But this variety is somehow a necessary part of the Fediverse I guessâŠ

As a transparent decision-making process is my primary concern there are many questions that would have to be answered in this way before embarking on something that changes the dynamics of communication.
Without a transparent decision-making process I will certainly choose another service as my fediverse home :)
Yes, âquote boostsâ are a great example of this. Interestingly (but far from surprisingly) most people who want them donât choose the fediverse services that already support them.
Instead the hope is that the software that doesnât have it, and has long had a clear stance on not implementing them, will still build them if enough (or the right) people demand them.
If people truly acted the way you described with regards to the fediverse, wouldnât they just choose another service?

* the EXPERIENCE of a strong demand with little reasoning about who and why
* a leaning towards a sudden demand from brand new users rather than concerns expressed by longtime users
The appeal of Mastodon was its stated attention to compassion. Iâm not a person at risk, but I see the expressed fear of disenfranchised people, whose voices are weaker by the day with the surge in users.
I think the idea of the Fediverse is in constant flux, and that is part of its appeal to me. Originally the term applied to the OStatus protocol rather than ActivityPub.
And while ActivityPub is indeed the dominant format today it would, in my mind, convey a smaller space than the wider potential.
If it had been decided Fedi can never be more than OStatus the term would be weaker.
I do believe my diagram can be used as an explanatory model whichever conviction one has.
