Rachel Botsman's newsletter resonated with me today.
How slow can you go?
What would you like to spend a few more minutes on, that you today rush through?

Rethink: Would you be more creative if you learned to slow down?
«Paris Marx is joined by Tim Schwab to discuss why the story we hear about Bill Gates and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation doesnât reflect their real impact on education and health around the world.
Tim Schwab is an investigative journalist and the author of The Bill Gates Problem: Reckoning with the Myth of the Good Billionaire.
Tim Schwab: âI mean, the problem is that this one side of reporting, itâs ended up producing what is essentially misinformation.
Itâs a lot of fictions really: this idea that Bill Gates is giving away all his money. Thatâs not true. His personal wealth is nearly doubled. During his tenure as a philanthropist.
You go to the Gates Foundationâs website, and youâll see lots of pictures of Black and Brown women and children, the so-called targets of the Gates Foundationâs charitable giving. But if you follow the money, almost all of the foundationâs charitable gifts go to rich nations like the United States, Switzerland, the United Kingdom.
So, once you start to really peel back the layers, you realize that a lot of this sort of prevailing news coverage of Gates is telling a story thatâs not just one-sided, but just itâs wrong.â»
I'm in the process of preparing for open heart surgery. It's an elaborate procedure where I'll get a new mechanical heart valve and also replace about 6-7 centimeters of the aorta.
This is followed by sick leave and rehabilitation with, among other things, breathing techniques to make sure my lung capacity is restored. It takes about three months for my rib cage to just heal up.
Although I've been aware of my congenital heart defect for a long time, the news of needing an imminent operation came quite suddenly and surprisingly. So how did I end up here?
In this blog post I share my experience up 'til now and the road ahead. The date of the operation is still not set, but expected to be in about a month.
âčïž This blog post was first written in Swedish. I've done my best to rewrite it in English in my own voice, not the mediocre voice of any AI tool:
- Barbie i Braille-skrift pÄ kartongen Àr strategiskt placerat enligt rÄd frÄn synskadade sjÀlva.
There's a lot to be said about the need to increase the trustworthiness of "AI" (probabilistic automation), but there's also a lot to be said about how "AI" is now, yesterday and today, reducing trust in just about everything it attaches itself to.

Lapparna.

Episode 351 of This Machine Kills: How AI is Boiling the Oceans
"We get into how the massive global expansion of data centres â thanks largely to demand from training and operating AI â is putting major strain on energy systems and requiring the generation of more electricity. Howâs all that new energy demand being met? Some renewables, a lot of fossil fuels, but also maybe futuristic magic technology? Big tech firms like Micorosoft and their nuclear tech partnersâincluding startups backed by Sam Altman and Bill Gatesâsay they expect to harness fusion by 2028. This prediction is totally unserious and fantastical, while also hiding the fact that the expansion of AI is powered largely by fossil fuels."
âMuch like the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs, humans are having an outsized impact on our planet.â
âIn the case of climate, we are not the dinosaurs. We are the meteor.â
This is everything I think about as more and more resource-hungry data centers are being built.
At this yearâs Hatch Conference in Berlin James and I will be taking to the stage to record an episode of UX Podcast in front of a live audience.
You could be one of the people in the audience.
We are joining a string of brilliant European design podcasts also doing live shows, and then there is of course all the keynote speakers sharing insights on topics such as Design Maturity, Career, UI & Craft, AR/XR and Ethics.
Check out the schedule, the lineup and workshop days sessions on the website. And yes, you get 10% off the ticket price using UXPODCAST at checkout â€ïž

In June 2023 I wrote:
«Will consumers perhaps come to see the phrase "AI-Powered System" in the same light as "Diesel-Powered SUV".»
Well, not yet it would seem.
In The Elements of AI Ethics from June of last year I build on The Elements of Digital Ethics from 2021. Which itself was the output of reading about digital harms for many years.
Seeing all of the categories of harms just get worse year on year is disheartening.
What goal is worth all this? I tend to fall back on a sentiment I use in my talks and teaching:
When a privileged group benefits from a technology, the more inclined they will be to ignore the harms done unto others by the same technology. Because drawing attention to the harm would suggest they should give up their personal gain to help someone else.
This appears to be true for the short term. In the long term the beneficiaries of technology will happily also ignore harm done unto themselves, as long as they get the experience boost in the moment.
What hope is there?
In my June 11 session for Ambition Empower I will be talking about how to champion technologies of compassion, drawing on work related to nature connectedness by P. Wesley Schultz, Marianne E. Krasny, F. Stephan Mayer and Cynthia M Frantz.
Technologies of compassion work in unison with an acknowledgement of our connection not only to each other but also to nature. Technology tends to separate us from nature, making us value it less - and causing us to increasingly worsen our own living conditions, and the conditions of all other species, over time.
But we can choose to design technology that takes nature into account.. Technology that works with, not against, nature. I believe this is what all schools must start teaching. Now.
Expect me to write more about this over the next year.

So youâre reading all these stories about machine learning being used to train models for predicting cancer. You may even read about a model with a 90% accuracy rate.
What if I told you that a model with an accuracy rate of 73% could be a better performer (higher Precision and Recall) than one with 90% accuracy.
You can not draw conclusions on headlines about 90% accuracy without understanding the accuracy paradox, and knowing that we can not rely on accuracy as the only metric.
Iâll let Tejumade Afonja explain, because intuition isnât always your friend.
âAccuracy Paradox for Predictive Analytics states that Predictive Models with a given level of Accuracy may have greater Predictive Power than Models with higher Accuracy.â
I love this interview so much. Haben was one of my favorite people to follow on Twitter before I left that platform. Very cool to see her being in Sweden and interviewing Aron.
If you don't know Haben Girma, she is the first Deafblind person to graduate from Harvard Law School, and is an advocate for disability as an opportunity for innovation. She helps organisations see possibility where so many tend to see obstacles.
Here is an important message from her website on https://habengirma.com/faq/ :
"What advice do you have for journalists writing about disabled people?"
"Challenge yourself to create a disability story without using the word inspiration. The overuse of the word, especially for the most trivial things, has dulled its meaning. People sometimes even use the word as a disguise for pity. For example, âYou inspire me to stop complaining about my problems because I should feel grateful I donât have yours.â Messages that perpetuate us versus them hierarchies contribute to marginalization. Engage audiences by moving beyond the inspiration clichĂ©."
Based on Slack* practices of using your data to train their "AI" (probabilistic machine), I'd consider instead using an open source (truly) tool like Discourse for your collaborative needs. You can download it and install it on your own server, or opt for Discourse hosting at a reasonable fee.
It's funny because listed as one of the users is OpenAI. I suppose OpenAI themselves value privacy and not having their content scraped.
