Geoffrey Hinton winning a Nobel prize was not great for educating on the real risks of machine learning.
Commentators on tv and radio here in Sweden are now on and off continuously about AI having to be reigned in because it’s getting smarter than us.
Anyway, today is the Nobel Day.

More and more tech giants controlling our everyday lives but not making any profits eventually has you realising that profits are not the motive. The control is the point. Money is made elsewhere, kept away from us, while keeping us all docile.

@JoWa Japp, och största boven i sammanhanget (avseende procentuell andel) är nog streamingtjänster. Det maskininlärning gör är dock att globalt uppmuntra till ytterligare ökningar ovanpå detta, i en tid när vi behöver minska.
The point that algorithms exacerbate inequality even when not specifically programmed to do so, and even if there is no obvious bias in the training data, I really want to explain more in my next article. If you know of good examples, let me know.

@torsten @JoWa Ja jag minns att FTC hade med detta i en tidig skrivelse som jag citerade i mitt första långa inlägg om AI-hajpen:
"Företag påstår att de säljer en AI-produkt men AI-teknik saknas. Ogrundade påståenden om AI-stöd i diverse digitala verktyg är inte helt ovanligt. FTC varnar specifikt för att användning av AI under utvecklingen av en produkt inte innebär att produkten innehåller AI."
Det understryker absolut hur godtyckligt AI som begrepp är. Men det finns heller ingen allmänt accepterad definition av AI. EU:s AI Act har ju en väldigt bred definition, liksom OECD. Många som pratar om AI till vardags skulle nog inte inkludera den typ av algoritmer som inbegrips.
Enligt en rad andra definitioner är det ju också helt rätt att säga att AI inte finns idag. 😅
@JoWa Ja, håller absolut med, det vore verkligen att föredra.
Ibland känns det som att man hellre vill debattera vilket programmeringsspråk som använts för att skapa ett virus, snarare än samhällseffekten av viruset.
Men för att dra den liknelsen vidare (tänker samtidigt som jag skriver), om det visar sig att programmeringsspråket till 90% används för att skapa virus, eller på ett oproportionerligt sätt bidrar till energiförbrukning och e-avfall, ja men då finns det förstås saker att gräva i där också.
@JoWa Just nu tänker jag att mycket också handlar om att snacket och hajpen aldrig lägger sig (och mina tirader hjälper ju inte alltid 😅).
Ju mer vi lär oss om hur vissa tillämpningar påverkar människors liv på ett orättvist sätt (Försäkringskassan och liknande avslöjanden runtom i Europa på senare tid) desto mer negativt inställda blir folk förstås.
Jag tycker mig se att det är många "AI"-tillämpningar som kritiseras som inte är generativ AI.

@JoWa Exakt så. Men ordet säljer så bra den här idén om maskiner som inte existerar, och ingen som söker investeringar eller löneökningar vågar nog sluta med det.

I often put "AI" in quotation marks as I think it’s a flawed expression that includes everything and nothing, selling a vision of machines that do not exist. Every time I repeat it, I give it legitimacy, which hurts a little.
I believe a fairy falls ill every time someone says "AI" with a straight face.

Folk verkar trötta på digitalisering. Men då kallar vi det AI de nästkommande 10 åren istället. Så blir allt bättre.

Ah… Sweden. The committee on AI has released their report to the government today.
The general feeling is a recommendation to go all in on a specific yet ill-defined technology without asking if it’s the right tool for the job.
But they do seem to be very certain that it’s all very urgent and we will all be left behind if we don’t act now.
I always wonder how far behind it’s possible to be left. It’s not like there’s a scale, or a point of reference. But damn, it’s urgent. We should essentially be panicking. You know, because those are the perfect conditions for well-reasoned decision-making.
I keep reading the phrase “task force” in the report (which is entirely in Swedish, and that’s really the only action point in English) and all I can think is Space Force.

Considering moving back to Mastodon. I love Akkoma, but I don’t have the time to maintain my installation.
On my Cloudron installation, Mastodon would be essentially maintained for me.
What saddens me most is that despite all the marketing of the ease of switching instances I will again lose my history of posts on my timeline (and there’s that one time I lost a few thousand followers).
Thankful I have a backup on micro.blog though.
This also means my posts can’t be this long anymore (Cloudron is kinda locked in that way) but maybe that’s a good thing, haha.
