@mkj That’s the one! Thank you!

What’s that ethical alternative to Patron that people keep mentioning in the Fediverse that I now have completely forgotten the name of? 😅

"AI changed my appearance in a way I didn't ask for and don't want. I hate that this always happens. But I will continue to use these tools because I believe they are the future."
Hearing people reason about "AI" can be like watching a multiple-vehicle collision in a single-entry roundabout where everyone is happily cheering each other on.

Some people will argue that ChatGPT* was not at fault in a teen suicide, “there were obviously many other factors at play”. But consider this: if you know you can design for better understanding, and add positive friction that helps people recognize when they are being misled by synthetic text, why wouldn’t you?
*As @datarama rightly points out, this should be better worded as addressing OpenAI, rather than their product, while I also wanted to draw attention to how the software, and how they have chosen to design it, is a component of the issue. But yes, perhaps there should be less emphasis on their software.

@jwcph I have to say, "Radicalized by decency" is just chef's kiss.

Over the past decade I’ve truly been struggling with the idea of human-centric design.
Putting people first is a major contributor to the climate crisis.
These days, instead, I make an effort to use the term ’universal wellbeing’.

A hammer will not simulate sycophancy when unwell people express desires of self-harm. Claiming that ”AI” is just another neutral tool that can be used for good or bad is not only wrong and inhumane, it sanctions life-threatening risks.
@samuel Tack Samuel!
If the product encourages a teen to hide self-inflicted strangulation marks, don’t tell me “it’s just a tool” and “they’re using it wrong”.

I get that voice cloning is a wonderful technology for people who have lost their voice and want to use their own voice for expressing their own words. That is giving someone control over self-expression, and self-respect. But when voice cloning is used to copy someone else’s voice for expressing things they never said, that is about removing control and dignity and moving their power across to another actor.
When people use language models to express themselves they are not engaging in self-expression. They are using the copied voices of thousands of other human beings (living and dead) for generating thoughts those people never said, mimicking and averaging the individual quirks and wordplay of texts written in the very real joy, agony and consumed minds of those humans.
It’s Frankenstein expression.
"Concerns around 'AI psychosis,' attachment and mental health are already growing," he added. "Some people reportedly believe their AI is God, or a fictional character, or fall in love with it to the point of absolute distraction."

”I wrote a book and AI is my writing partner.”
or
”Tens of thousands of writers just contributed to my book without me needing their consent or blessing. I simply used a product that stole their writing first.”
