Anybody have experience with label printers? The classic one of course is Dymo but I truly hate how they’ve gone all proprietary with their labels. The series 5 printers have rfid chips on the rolls(!) so zero chance of using 3rd party labels.
I’m seeing there are thermal label printers as well, requiring no ink, which seems appealing, but also very nostalgic for me. Believe it or nor I had a thermal printer in the 1980s, for my Sinclair ZX81.
So what I’m really asking I suppose is if there’s anyone who could recommend a label printer, or knows what to especially watch out for.
Use-cases: address labels, name tags, labels on storage boxes, labelling various plugs and devices.
I realised I could have been more clear in saying I was thinking about desktop label printers rather than handheld ones, but I have always been a big fan of the handheld ones as well so I truly don’t mind seeing examples of them here as well 😊
@mkj Ja, så är det verkligen. Cloudron har varit en bra medelväg för mig eftersom jag betalar för att uppdateringarna ska komma.
@datarama Det var nog mest jag som tänkte att ukulele går snabbare att lära sig än gitarr och därför mer troligt att jag lyckas med. Men kanske inte då :) – och så tänke jag på storlek i hemmet 😅
@mkj @quite Ja, precis! Jag använder ju själv Cloudron men Yunohost är på samma tema. Tänk att få det till något som vem som helst kan ha hemma helt naturligt. Det vore såklart fint om man bara kan återanvända en dator man redan har tillgång till. Det kanske är närmare än jag föreställt mig… Yunohost med lite mer ”plug-and-play” och ’snällare’ gränssnitt.

En idé jag burit på i många år är att skapa en låda som valfri person lätt kopplar in på sitt hemmanätverk för lagring och hantering av all sin egen media, en Fediverse-server, osv. Inklusive möjlighet till egen hantering av e-post till exempel (väl medveten om hur komplext det kan vara att driva e-post idag). Det vore ett oerhört givande projekt att jobba med på många sätt. Färdigt paket med programvara med ett enkelt gränssnitt för att aktivera/inaktivera det man behöver, allt lokalt, och utan behov av att aktivera internet. Men såklart möjligt.
Övertygad om att det borde pågå en del sådana här projekt redan förstås.
Det är sannolikt en del av min egen radikalisering just nu men har precis upptäckt Dan Berglund och lyssnade just på De mördades fria republik. 🙃
Plötsligt blev det hårresande tydligt hur vansinnigt det är att streaming-fenomenet gör det möjligt för andra människor att följa i realtid vad jag lyssnar på, och var jag pausar. Hur i helskotta hamnade vi här.
Förutom detta så påmindes jag om hur gärna jag velat bli visskrivare. Och tänk att kunna plinka på en gitarr ändå. Borde nog ta upp den där tanken på att gå och köpa en ukulele ändå.

Problemet är inte att oljan och kolet tar slut under överskådlig tid. Så är inte heller fallet med mycket av det fysiska material vi – i ständigt ökande utsträckning – bygger upp vår vardag kring. Däremot tar utsläppsutrymmet slut i den bemärkelsen att varje ton CO2 vi släpper ut i atmosfären, genom sin växthuseffekt, bidrar till att rasera förutsättningarna för mänskligt liv.
Också andra delar av den växande mänskliga metabolismen genererar ständigt ökande avfallsutsläpp, till exempel plaster. Inte heller dessa, i huvudsak fossilbaserade, utsläpp visar tecken på att avta; tvärtom – de ökar."

@osma @Adam Yes, Signal does not pass any message content through Apple servers. What's happening here is that notifications are stored locally on the phone, and if those notifications are set to display name and content they will be retrievable from local storage on the phone. Digging into this now but it seems the notifications are stored locally for 30 days (no idea about guarantees of deletion after that).
And of course even if you yourself have previews turned off in your notifications, the people you are sending messages to may not.
Meredith Whittaker addressed this in December 2023, saying “push notifications simply act as a ping that tells the app to wake up. They don't reveal who sent the message or who is calling (not to Apple, Google, or anyone). Notifications are processed entirely on your device. This is different from many other apps.”
