My migration appears to be more broken than I thought. Many of the people who are listed as following me, aren’t actually following me. They can only see ”Withdraw follow request” on my profile 😅

Ha. Fascinating. Likely you can withdraw request and follow ‘again' and that will trigger a regular follow.

I have updated the infographic The many branches of the Fediverse to version 3.0.
This update includes some new connections and makes more clear that it is software that makes use of the ActivityPub protocol specifically that can be seen as part of the #Fediverse.
The diagram also includes adjacent protocols and these are to encourage further discussion around the concept of federated social networks.
Most questions that people tend to have around this infographic are answered in the blog post, but I am always happy to talk about suggested changes and additions.

Oh interesting! Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
In my case the missing 2,600 followers are in limbo as they are no longer at the old account either.
My idea at first was that one cause for this could be short-time users of Mastodon who just tried out the service 1-2 times and then haven't logged in again, thus not triggering the re-follow. Not sure if this is a realistic theory.
In my case there is the added complexity of moving to an Akkoma instance, so I'm guessing there are issues with this as well.
I do now have examples of people who are listed in my followers list not actually following me (they have the "Withdraw follow request" button). I also have people who are following me but are not listed in my profile as followers 😂

Some weirdness after my #migration to this account (from Mastodon to Akkoma):
I have reports of people looking at my profile and seeing the action "Withdraw request" instead of follow.
But I don't have approval of follows activated. Any follow should work immediately.
My theory is that this is due to a timeout when I migrated and many accounts automatically tried to follow my new account at the same time, essentially triggering a DDoS attack on my own server. When that timed out, the action (button) got stuck in this state.
The only way to follow me in these cases appears to be to withdraw (click the button) and click follow again. Or wait days/weeks for the servers to renegotiate.
Unless someone with ActivityPub/Mastodon skills knows how to trigger those re-follows (and move requests) again?

It goes into the mechanics of #migrating, how this can trigger a denial of service attack on your own server, and how renegotiation of follows can take days, weeks or longer(!)

I see similar experiences all the time. It makes you realise just how much the recommendation algorithms have been in control over the content that influences us, rather than the human participants.

Okay, if anyone is seeing this I managed to move this instance from a server in Sweden to a server in Germany (edit: Oops. Actually: Finland), managing to copy and restore the database, and hopefully keeping most stuff intact… 😅
If things are “misbehaving” for a while longer it’s because the domain name has moved to a new ip address and that pointer has to be removed and refreshed in various caching systems.
I am learning so much and having great fun experimenting, I have to say.
Taking my server offline in 20 minutes. Will attempt a server migration. Outage will likely last at least a few hours... We'll see 😂

Today I had the first introduction to the remote course I'm attending this semester at Umeå university. The topic is Media, Communication and Sustainability.
The first assignment is due on Friday and I'm almost done. Obviously excited about going back to school.
Wanted to share: I was very heart-warmed by the fact that the logo on all slides is complemented with the university name written in a Sámi language.
So instead of Umeå universitet (Swedish) the written part of the logo reads Ubmejen Universitiähta (Ume Sámi).
If you are unaware, the Sámi are indigenous to large northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and of the Murmansk Oblast, Russia.
This university is located in the north-east of Sweden and I was glad to see their recognition of the Sámi in a prominent position on every single slide.
I have about 50 links I want to include in my newsletter. Which is too much. So I've been postponing my newsletter while I figure out how to prioritise.
Meanwhile the number of links keep increasing...
