It was a short trip for Apple from rebelling against Big Brother in that 1984 video commercial to releasing the portable pocket device that enables global mass surveillance and mass manipulation of truth.

From supporting changemakers to encouraging average, probabilistic output in ads for Apple Intelligence.

From crushing conformity to crushing creativity.

It happened so fast very few had time to take note.

This is a nice read about the origins of that ”Here’s to the crazy ones…” campaign. As expected, Walter Isaacson’s book contains a bit of revisionist history.

I've been hearing this argument for a long while now:

"People criticised some tech in the 1900s and look it all turned out okay!"

1) How much was it really criticised?
2) Did it really turn out okay for everyone?
3) There was also tech that never got built because it harmed too much.
4) How is this even an argument for some current tech being okay?!

37% of Swedish weapons exports are to non-democratic countries, and the biggest 2024 customer was United Arab Emirates.

This nordic, ”peaceful”, ”neutral”, ”progressive” country is one of the world’s biggest arms exporters, all while managing to not be particularly known for it.

There is a famous photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square on August 14, 1945.

I just saw someone post a Ghibli version of that photo.

'Abuse upon abuse' I thought, and it's worth understanding that the kiss was in no way reciprocated by the nurse. The sailor was George Mendonsa, who was witnessed to be just grabbing many random people on the street.

The nurse was Greta Zimmer Friedman, 21 years old at the time.

« She wandered into Times Square when a passing sailor locked her in an unexpected embrace. “I did not see him approaching, and before I know it I was in this vice grip,” she told CBS news in a 2012 interview.

“It wasn’t my choice to be kissed. The guy just came over and grabbed. That man was very strong. I wasn’t kissing him. He was kissing me”. »

When you know this, and see her limp arms in the photo, the photo takes on whole new meaning.

When someone uses that photo now to, in seconds without effort, generate a copy in a very recognizable cartoonish style made possible through pirated content from a true artist, it's a sad day.

16 years ago I was interviewed by a journalist who then added me on LinkedIn.

12 years later one of my client organisations was laid bare by that journalist.

I was made to understand that I was suspected by management to be "the leak", given that visible connection.

Data can harm erroneously.

When, in five years, this is acknowledged, consultants will spend 10 years unsuccessfully trying to fix them.

Just my dystopian observation of the day.

Once again a tech magazine doing the important breakdown. This time of political language.

”First we had newspeak. Then we had doublespeak. This is contraspeak. Up is called down and left is called right, both of which are then repeated widely by partisans happy to help a government that doesn’t care about them weather the storm. That which is classified is referred to as the contrary. War plans, or battle plans if you prefer, are said to be something entirely different, even though they are not. And, through repetition, a land of make believe is created for one half of the political aisle to live in, like toddlers unwilling to accept the consequences of their own actions.”
