For clarity: As was rightly pointed out to me on fedi, ChatGPT is software and is by definition not a responsible entity. At fault are the humans working at and managing OpenAI. While the design of software can harm, the humans behind that design should be more clearly addressed.

*As @datarama rightly points out, this should be better worded as addressing OpenAI, rather than their product, while I also wanted to draw attention to how the software, and how they have chosen to design it, is a component of the issue. But yes, perhaps there should be less emphasis on their software.

Det har varit en del snack om Signal den senaste veckan i och med att vi har makthavare som återigen går ut med vilseledande information.

Jag påminner om denna text där jag redogör för varför Signal alltid kommer vara ett bättre val än WhatsApp, även om bägge tjänster har totalsträckskryptering.

Tyyvärr är ChatControl fortfarande på tapeten och jag kommer i nästa vecka ut med en ny text om problemen det skapar.

I get that voice cloning is a wonderful technology for people who have lost their voice and want to use their own voice for expressing their own words. That is giving someone control over self-expression, and self-respect. But when voice cloning is used to copy someone else’s voice for expressing things they never said, that is about removing control and dignity and moving their power across to another actor.

When people use language models to express themselves they are not engaging in self-expression. They are using the copied voices of thousands of other human beings (living and dead) for generating thoughts those people never said, mimicking and averaging the individual quirks and wordplay of texts written in the very real joy, agony and consumed minds of those humans.

It’s Frankenstein expression.

Thanks for the perspective Andy. My thoughts:

1) I fail to see how the way the computer is programmed has much in common with how a human is informed and inspired.

2) "Original sin" to me implies times long gone. It seems an imperfect metaphor when the sin is ongoing.

Sorry for the tardy reaction. It's been one of those weeks.
