Thank you for this important piece Abeba! 👊🔥 x.com/Abebab/status/…
As a certain president gets ever more media coverage, for consistent non-surprising behavior, it's easy to miss the bigger news.
The ebola outbreak in Congo is now declared an international health emergency by @WHO

@rachelcoldicutt My addition to the comments in this thread would be: what you want to accomplish should be a core part of any bio. Knowing someone's passion is usually what makes me want to hear more from them.
But yes, short rather than long. If long, tell a story. 😊

@berkun This is the skill that I attribute most of my success as a designer to.
So, in essence, yes :)
But I'd also have to discuss what 'designer' means for you to express a considered opinion on 'all designers'. And also the word 'basic'.

@JustinAmphlett Nice. Which version do you have?
While it's pretty much impossible to remove Amazon from your life, does anyone have experience with competing e-book readers - like the Nook or Kobo variants?
Although I am wary of the Nook after this weird misstep in 2012: they replaced all occurences of the word Kindle with Nook in their e-books. So in War and Peace they don't kindle fires, they nook(!) them.

@jmspool This was interesting. Overwhelmed and whelmed were once synonyms. I thought otherwise you had found an English word for hygge. :)

@jmspool Kind of mindblowing that people weren’t underwhelmed until the 1950s. 😏
Cool, Google are closing down the project that did not exist.

Do you, like me, hate marketing notifications in your iPhone apps?
Did you know that these apps are likely in violation of Apple’s Review Guidelines for the App Store?
« 4.5.4 Push Notifications must not be required for the app to function, and should not be used for advertising, promotions, or direct marketing purposes or to send sensitive personal or confidential information. Abuse of these services may result in revocation of your privileges. »
I suggest you write reviews (on the app page in the App Store) for apps that send marketing and promotional messages in their notifications, pointing out this violation. Unfortunately Apple does not provide a coherent way for users to report apps.
Accepting others for who they are is not about empowering them, it's about empowering you.
If you can provide a safe space for people you previously met with prejudice, that's you empowered.
Like any power, it requires regular training.
The rewards are immense.
I am far from perfect in this area, but I practice regularly through coaching. Attending a coaching program (in my case an ICF-accredited education) is one of my best career decisions, impacting all aspects of life.

@jmspool I brought up the problems with this fallacy in a talk last year and it was astonishing to me how many came up to me after to defend it.
There are so many of these truthisms being repeated... adding to the complexity of teaching, when others in teaching roles believe them.
I'm halfway through Brainstorm: Detective Stories from the World of Neurology by Suzanne O'Sullivan and it is an amazing read. My intent is to do a write-up when I'm through it later this week.

The more convenience we have, the less we need to plan and know.
The less we plan, and the less we know, the more convenience becomes a gateway to exploitation.
As more exploitation happens, the more wicked our problems.
Wicked problems are inconvenient.
But not if you can ignore them.
Because it's convenient.
