Google promised a fix after its photo-categorization software labeled black people as gorillas in 2015.

Their “fix” was to censor “gorilla” from their search, as well as “chimp”, “chimpanzee” and “monkey”. That’s how bad the technology is.

5 years later, their Vision AI was shown to provide these automated labels when decoding images:

Black person + handheld thermometer = gun
Asian person + handheld thermometer = electronic device

Black hand + handheld thermometer = gun
Same picture with light skin = monocular

Again, as they always do, Google apologized.

“In the absence of more rigorous testing, it is impossible to say that the system is biased” they write.

Gee, I wonder who should perform that rigorous testing…

Remember when Amazon proved to have an AI-based recruiting tool that was biased against women. They couldn’t fix that either. Their solution was to scrap it.

My walkthrough of what Apple's recently announced child safety features truly mean, and their potential negative impact. There is significant cause for worry with these steps into mass surveillance.

Lots of links and references to people smarter than me.

"Many [Apple employees] expressed worries that the feature could be exploited by repressive governments looking to find other material for censorship or arrests, according to workers who saw the days-long thread."

This is hugely important. The way Apple are releasing information bit by bit allows them to continuously reframe, making it seem as if critics are confused - when they truly are not.

I keep seeing Apple say their phone's are the same globally, not different by country. In the same breath they say on-device detection will be rolled out first in the US. Meanwhile: FaceTime was blocked in Saudi Arabia. And lots of compromise in China:

"Attempts to limit sexually explicit speech tend to (accidentally or on purpose) harm LGBTQ people more. Many of these rules are aimed in particular at sex workers, and LGBTQ people are disproportionately likely to use sex work as means of survival."

The huge pushback from the privacy community has delayed Apple’s rollout. This is not yet a win but an indication of how important it is to keep fighting against notions like this. It moves the needle.

“Apple's plan to conduct on-device scanning of photos and messages is the most dangerous proposal from any tech company in modern history,” says Evan Greer, deputy director of digital rights nonprofit Fight for the Future.
