I’d be very careful with what I use direct messaging for on Mastodon.
The way it works here is that you can send a toot/post that only the people mentioned in the toot can see.
But then if you are talking about someone on the platform and you happen to mention their username in that toot, well then they can see it too. 😬
General privacy rule: don’t write stuff here you really don’t want others to see. Something like Signal would better for that.

Some things that come to mind:
- avoid uploading long videos to your instance
- Host your own videos on Vimeo or the Internet Archive
- Alternatively join or host a PeerTube instance
- avoid sharing YouTube links, as YouTube videos always track viewers across websites
- TikTok also collects lots of data
- If you want to link to a video on YouTube, use an Invidious instance as a relay: https://invidious.io/
So, will depend on concern for data usage, stream efficiency, but also privacy.

But the lack of acknowledgement of finding it anywhere is always a red flag for me.

Obviously can never get around that there are still trust issues with providers... 😬

@maloki Haha! But you're absolutely right. I will be careful to not mention browsers and have it seem like a recommendation. Feel like I need to write a blog post now as a sort of disclaimer to be able to refer to.
Only cloud browsers really have the potential of offering privacy it would seem.

Contrary to popular belief there is no law that says websites need to have cookie popups. There are laws that say companies need informed consent to manage personal data. It's perfectly possible to build websites that don't collect personal data by default.
Popups are how the market "solved" this. But most of those popups are themselves illegal(!)

@Hilaryonline Starting up with a new #a11y project on Monday with a new client. What's become obvious is how nervous they've been about doing the wrong thing, so they've done nothing rather than something...
It's also as if they don't want to be caught out with how they've ignored it for a long time, which hiring someone to help them would expose. And time just goes by. Finally someone comes in and wants to do something. They got a new manager recently.
