I feel like I may have started developing an allergy to ChatGPT-generated texts.
They're most easily recognized by 3-5 paragraphs of generic, emotionless text where the final paragraph starts with something like "Lastly", "Finally" or "In conclusion".
It's like I'm back in 5th grade English class. My allergic reaction manifests itself as me closing my laptop lid, hard, and then screaming for 3-4 minutes.

I've tried BigBlueButton a couple of times but found it a bit cumbersome and bloated for my needs.
What are you all using for online meetings and teaching in terms of video service? In line with avoiding big tech I mean?
I've been using Whereby (Norwegian) for years but have found it becoming less and less reliable.
Aware of Jitsi and BigBlueButton but I thought this would be a perfect space for asking around as I will definitely have missed some interesting players. I also run my own @owncast server for specific live events.

Thinking of some ways digitalisation has been causing problems in the workplace over the past decades.
1. Doing things in the same ways and in the same timeframe, just now with computers. Computers that require passwords and power and where data sometimes gets lost, or stolen by bad actors half-way across the planet.
2. Making things in one workarea easier with computers â leading to layoffs. People who fail to learn the new system in a given time are laid off. The people left have to work just as hard as before, just now with twice the output and fewer colleagues. So they quit in the end as well. Better to hire someone who can't remember any better. Firing and hiring comes with costs, but it's another budget post so the connection is invisible, or vague at best.
3. Making things easier in one workarea that simultaneously increases the workload for someone else, because increasing the output capacity in one location doesn't automatically increase the input capacity somewhere else.
4. Doing things in more timeconsuming ways, because computers manifest new opportunities for collecting data and adding strict rules of access and operations that remove any flexibility that was there before.
The good news is that by making bad systems we have now created new problems that we can spend time solving tomorrow.

In the latest episode of Carefully â about voice clones â I had a clone for my voice do a part of the audio. Itâs similar but not perfect. And it would be interesting to hear how easily listeners can catch what part it is. The episode is 11 minutes long.
When you do a lot of podcast recording you know that the sound of your voice varies across the day. I donât want to start a recording in the morning and finish it off in the evening. In that sense the difference to me between my voice and the clone is significant. But Iâm not certain everyone picks up on these nuances.
More to the point: had I only used the cloned voice for all of it, itâs very hard to make out that itâs not a human speaking.
At the end of the episode is where I reveal the voice clone part, and play that part again.

Fair and valid point. The tool truesize.com only allows me to drag one country at a time so this was the fastest way I could get this type of image. But I will definitely consider this for the future.

Thanks, yes there are so many aspect to this to explore further. Had I been back at university I would likely have taken time to dive deeper in the whole subject area.
I wrote this post a while back using map projections as an example of how we often can draw the wrong conclusions because we insist on using outdated maps, or maps that were designed for a completely different purpose.

Det Àr mycket tal om AI-etik som riskerar att fastna i sjÀlva tekniken. Under det att jag arbetat med och utbildat inom digital etik har det varit oerhört viktigt att lyfta de strukturella egenskaperna i tech-branschen som en del av utmaningen. Det rÀcker inte med att bygga tekniken pÄ ett etiskt sÀtt, det handlar ocksÄ om till exempel vem som bygger, varför man bygger och vem som glöms bort.
SÄ hÀr sa jag i min förelÀsning för Raoul Wallenberg-institutet i januari 2022:
"En liten, liten del av mÀnskligheten (3 miljoner AI-utvecklare Àr 0.0004% av vÀrldens befolkning) har kunskapen och makten att bygga maskiner som Àr 'intelligenta' nog att potentiellt bestÀmma vem som fÄr arbete, vem som fÄr ekonomiskt stöd, vem det juridiska systemet litar pÄ och vems biometriska data som kan skördas av marknadsförare.
"Vi har teknik i hÀnderna pÄ ett fÄtal, födda i samhÀllen av överflöd, med makten att forma livsvillkor hos mÀnniskor över hela planeten.
"Den hÀr assymetrin av kunskap och makt Àr en kritisk utmaning för mÀnskliga rÀttigheter. En algoritm som Àr förtryckande, rasistisk, trÄngsynt och orÀttvis kan vara alla dessa saker pÄ ett oerhört mycket mer effektivt sÀtt Àn nÄgon mÀnniska."
I Elementen inom Digital Etik har jag lyft in 32 element baserade pÄ faktiska och erkÀnda problem som Àr lika relevanta för den AI-hajp som pÄgÄr i samhÀllet just nu. Brister som behöver mer uppmÀrksamhet och mer tillfredstÀllande hantering.
Jag publicerade första versionen av dessa element i mars 2021 och de har visat sig oerhört anvÀndbara i utbildning och workshops för att bryta ner samtalen i konkreta reflektioner och övervÀganden. De Àr fria att anvÀnda i ditt eget arbete och din egen undervisning.
Jag tror inte att vi kan eller bör stoppa teknisk utveckling med svepande och ogrundade farhÄgor, men vi kan och bör hantera den pÄ ett sÀtt sÄ att skadan den leder till hÄlls till ett minimum, och nyttan för fler mÀnniskor blir tydligare. Det innebÀr ocksÄ ett mÀrkbart ansvarstagande.. Ett ansvar som innebÀr att de som skapar kan hÄllas till svars för sina kreationer.

There is a missed opportunity for many media outlets when an African country is in the news. That opportunity has to do with size.
To understand the challenge of air lifting people spread out in a country that is as big as Sudan, size references help.
Iâve attached an image showing how Sudan overlaps the Scandinavian Peninsula and Finland. Its western border aligns with Norwayâs westernmost border (and a bit into the Norwegian Sea), and its eastern border aligns with Finlandâs eastern border, and then also stretches further into Russia in the northeast. The height of Sudan aligns with Swedenâs height.
From a land mass perspective you could easily throw in Denmark, Iceland and the UK inside the perimeter as well (to cover parts of the Baltic, North, and Norwegian Sea).
For perhaps obvious reasons most densely populated areas are along the Nile river, but size matters in providing the complete picture of the conflict. Many world maps in the news to a really poor job of communicating size, and I see this as a failure in reporting. Instead they often reinforce biases about country size.
