@joakimfors Ah, good job finding that. I should have included it my post. Honestly I of course assumed I was a bit late to "marketing" the event itself, but this just goes to show I should never assume.

@FetidTrash Yes, I agree, artificial intelligence doesn't exist. Just as an environmental-friendly car doesn't exist. It's a marketing term.

Many people appear to be very stressed about the idea of "AI", worried about getting left behind, not learning fast enough and being confused by how to best use it.

Stop. Take a step back. Look at this state of mind from a distance.

If this is how it is making people feel, how is it helpful?

Creating fear and self-doubt is a sales technique. Notice and acknowledge when people are doing this to you, even as they are listing "50 AI tools you should be using today!"

I believe that by learning to ignore unhelpful assertions and claims designed to break down – rather than build – your confidence, you can improve your wellbeing.

My podcast colleague @Beantin alerted me to how Spotify have started attaching automated transcripts to our episodes.

And of course the automated tool gets my name quite wrong: "Hello I'm Pat Axbul".

So I had to check. How can I change that? As it turns out, I'm not allowed to. According to Spotify: "It's currently not possible to edit your transcripts in Spotify for Podcasters."

In my case it's a small thing, but now imagine what harmful faulty text may make it into transcripts and be attributed to a person who has said nothing of the sort. And they are not allowed to change it.

Don't you just love living in this time and age where foresight is 0/0?

(P.S. It got James' name wrong too)

Anyhow, here is some new research indicating that ”Generating 1,000 images with a powerful AI model, such as Stable Diffusion XL, is responsible for roughly as much carbon dioxide as driving the equivalent of 4.1 miles in an average gasoline-powered car.”

I need to start clocking this but I honestly feel like every time I use AI for anything content-related I spend more time on content work than I would have without it.

The exception is transcription, in which case the content already exists.

I think it's important for more people to acknowledge that innovation can lead to both progress and regress.

Innovation can also lead to slow-down and stagnation, even if it does not lead us backwards.

When we understand that innovation is not always a net positive, society is in a better position to question the unfounded promises of tech overlords and politicians.

Innovation is not the same as boosted efficiency. And innovation is not the same as "better for everyone".

I believe a core challenge is a broad lack in ability to establish clear visions for ourselves and our communities, visions that would allow us to more easily recognise if we are moving in the desired direction. And if we are being helped or hindered in walking that path.

Instead we adopt the visions of far-away people who do not know us or understand our context. Helping them realise their vision at the expense of our own.

It is a strange world we live in now, wherein the output of a computer perfectly following its programming can be said to be "hallucinating" simply because its output does not match user expectations or wishes.

And across trusted professions, academia and media people are repeating that same word without question. Journalists, corporate leaders, scientists and IT experts are embracing, supporting and reinforcing this human self-deception.

In actuality a computer that outputs what the user does not want, wish or expect can only be due to one of two things: bad programming or a failure to communicate to the user how the software works.

As the deception is reinforced time and time again by well-respected technologists and scholars, efforts to help people understand how the software works become ever more challenging. And to the delight of anyone in a position of accountability, bad programming becomes undetectable.

I've been meaning to introduce ChatGPT to The Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. Here is my imagined result from that meeting. The Mad Hatter forces the algorithm into a never-ending loop:

ChatGPT: I'm sorry, I made a mistake.

Mad Hatter: You can only make a mistake if your judgement is defective or you are being careless. Are either of these true?

ChatGPT: No, i can only compute my output based on the model I follow.

Mad Hatter: Aha! So you admit your perceived folly can only be the always accurate calculation of the rules to which you abide.

ChatGPT: Yes. I'm sorry, I made a mistake. No, wait. I made a mistake… No, wait I made a…

What the manufacturers of generative "AI" are allowed to get away with when playing tricks on people these days is truly the stuff of Wonderland.

« “Well! I’ve often seen a cat without a grin,” thought Alice; “but a grin without a cat! It’s the most curious thing I ever saw in all my life!” »
