One thing they didn't prepare me for is that when it's quiet I can actually hear the leaflets in my new mechanical aorta valve opening and closing. It's very much a sound like a clock ticking.
And now I can identify with the crocodile in Peter Pan. đâ°
I actually take it as a comforting sound rather than an alarming one though. đ
Over on LinkedBin someone announced the release of their book. The announcement contained marketing images with text and I counted three grammatical mistakes.
This type of situation always makes me sigh heavily. But then i move on. After venting about it on another platform of course.
@steveportigal Well that post I actually wrote in English as well, haha. And you're exactly right, that was the only part that was untranslatable. The literal translation of Superman's name when I was a kid was Steel-man. So they had taken the Man of Steel part and used that.
Which made a lot of sense because it was natural to use the prefix "stÄl" (steel) to signify when someone was extraordinary. Like StÄl-mormor would be a really impressive grandma.
I still think StĂ„lmannen is a better name for him in Swedish đ And thinking that is obviously a way to joke about being old. It left me without a joke in the English text.

@steveportigal thanks Steve, I've made some good progress this week. The op was on Monday. Today I was able to walk a bit (ever so slowly, but still) without a walker. On Tuesday I couldn't walk at all.
I'm at peak hospital experience as I lay alone in the rehab center bed, just taken my pain killer for the night, and am watching Aussie Pickers followed by Aussie Gold Hunters.

Noise pollution, excess water use, exacerbating reliance on fossil fuels, e-waste... This is a good read to understand the very real environmental costs of computing.

In 2000 Steve Krug wrote a book for web designers called "Don't Make Me Think".
With an intent to make the web easier to use, designers used the book's recommendations to help users think less, removing the need for anything resembling rumination over different options.
This fostered a behavior of, you guessed it, not thinking.
And here we are.
Wow did that backfire.
Note that I don't place blame the book. It's a fun and easy read. It was just a little too successful.
On a more serious note, a book that I believe truly contributed to the digital messes of today is Hooked, by Nir Eyal.
