What’s good/best practice for displaying an article in a narrow centered column and allowing images to break out of the container (centered but wider on large screens)?
Like the way Medium of @ghost.org displays wide images.

So I'm playing around with making my own theme for Ghost and there's one thing I really want to get right:
Ghost has built-in functionality for setting the width of images to break out of the article container, resulting in images that span the full width of the viewport, alternatively about 50% between the content column and the viewport edges. This is set in the Ghost editor and simply adds class names to the figure element. It's up to me to code the output.
What is best practice for accomplishing this with CSS? Because the solutions I'm finding aren't very neat. And they for example add a horizontal scrollbar to the browser...

Never rented a movie from Blockbuster as that’s primarily an American phenomenon, though I understand one could essentially rent a movie from Blockbuster online today. Sweden also got rid of checks pretty early, so never done that.
The rest could’ve all happened in the same day.

Många kommer nu skriva och prata om kvinnan som blev lurad på pengar i tron att hon uppvaktades av Brad Pitt. Jag tycker det är viktigt att vi riktar oerhörd tacksamhet gentemot Anne, som hon heter.
Vi ska vara tacksamma för att Anne valde att tala ut om bedrägeriet. Många människor blir lurade varje dag, och de flesta tycker det är för pinsamt att prata om, vilket gör detta till ett osynligt samhällsproblem. På flera sätt är det del av en stor bondfångeri-industri.
Sedan hon deltog i ett fransk tv-program för att berätta och varna andra har Anne på sociala medier vitt och brett förlöjligats och kallats för dum i huvudet. Hon har förlorat alla sina pengar och berättar att hon försökt ta sitt liv tre gånger.
Programmet har tagits ner av kanalen men går förstås att hitta online.
Och vad har nu detta utbredda förlöjligande gjort för människors framtida vilja att berätta om när de blivit lurade? Att anmäla brott? Det som vi behöver för att utveckla vår förmåga att utreda, förstå och lära oss för att kunna förebygga brotten. För att skydda andra.
Anne har också legat i skilsmässa med sin man och själv gått igenom cancerbehandling och varit inlagd för svår depression (förhållanden som utnyttjades av bedragarna). Många människor är extra utsatta och sårbara i perioder av sitt liv.
Även Netflix i Frankrike valde att göra narr av händelsen genom att på sociala medier lägga ut: “fyra filmer att se med Brad Pitt (på riktigt) utan kostnad”.
När jag skriver om etik och mänskliga rättigheter inom digital utveckling vet jag att det kan dyka upp obekväma känslor och tankar. Därför erbjuder jag på min sajt en omfattande lista över upgifter om stödlinjer, alltid tillgänglig i sidfoten:

Att ha på sig reflexer när det är mörkt ute är självklart när man förstår hur svårligen man upptäcks av människor som framför fordon. Men att ha reflexer på sig kan i vissa fall förvilla automatiska bromssystem i bilar.
Kollisionsvarning och automatiska nödbromsar är inbyggda i de flesta moderna bilar. Under 2019 var automatisk nödbroms vid låga hastigheter standard på ungefär 85 procent av alla nysålda bilar.
En ny studie från välrenommerade institutet Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) i USA visar dock att reflexer och reflexvästar kan förvilla sensorerna på de här systemen. Men det är inte konsekvent mellan bilmärken. Subaru Forester bromsar i alla lägen medan Honda CR-V plöjer rakt igenom testdockan utan att ens sakta ner när den bär reflexer eller reflexjacka, även när vägbanan är upplyst med 10 eller 20 lux. Med hel- istället för halvljus bromsade bilen bättre när dockan INTE hade reflexer på sig.
Varken Honda CR-V eller Mazda CX-5 reagerade på fotgängaren när den bar reflexer, även om bägge sänkte hastigheten när dockan endast var klädd i svart(!) Och för den tekniskt bevandrade som undrar så var dockan alltså rörlig, inte stillastående, för den här studien.
Samma teknik, reflexer, som får människor att se dig bättre kan få tekniken att se dig sämre. Det kan bli som en högvisuell osynlighetsmantel. Givet de olika utfallen för olika bilar vill institutet nu att det görs fler studier med fler bilmärken, och att svagheterna i detektionssystemen utreds ordentligt.
Ha självklart reflexer på dig. Du måste synas! Men utgå också alltid ifrån att människan, och fordonet hen kör, kanske inte alls upptäcker dig i tid ändå. Var alltid försiktig.
Och var försiktig med en alltför stark tilltro till teknik.
Varje problem vi ser idag var en gång en lösning på ett gammalt problem. Och varje ny lösning skapar förstås nya problem. I tider av snabb teknikutveckling måste man lägga mycket tid på att förstå problemen som “smarta” lösningar skapar.

This volume control is one of my favorites, as it explores what happens when you borrow ideas of movement from unexpected places. In this case: curling.
The tilt version of the volume slider feels kinda calming to me for some reason. It also brings in the concept of “what if this was a physical object, how would it behave?"
Some people I guess just want to crank up the volume.
But what if the volume control is a lever and you didn’t see this at first.
I don’t know why the pump volume slider always makes me laugh. But yeah, it’s too funny. There’s a bit of Sisyphus to this one.

I’m certainly the target group for a volume slider based on Tetris. Each completed row raises the volume one point. I have no idea how it is lowered. I guess you have to fail. 😀
This solo version of Pong is certainly appealing, but I’m not sure I’ve figured out the mechanics of it yet. I think if the right paddle misses volume goes up, and if the left paddle misses, the volume goes down.

I do miss the blogosphere. Seeing smalls signs of its revival but those could be wishful thinking.
Network effects are for me a core feature of the Internet, not reliant on closed platforms...

As people are upset about Meta's moderation policies I'd expect them to be upset about Substack as well.
