How much effort do you put into making your website more energy-efficient? Files, photos, scripts and content can all be optimised to reduce their carbon footprint, which is impacted by storage, transfer and downloads of all these files. And yes, caching matters.
During my studies in Media, Communication and Sustainable Development this spring I wrote a brief campaign idea, intended to encourage data efficiency.
I’d really like to spark interest and awareness for the potential of reducing environmental impact of digital work – with simple, straight-forward measures. And an encouragement for organisations to showcase their support for a sustainable approach to digital service development
One worry now is that the increased demand for AI is instead boosting electricity and water use – moving us in the wrong direction.
Is this on your mind and what types of conversations are you having around the energy-efficiency of your website and other digital assets?

P.S. The featured images on my own website can be reduced by more than half by choosing the WebP image format rather than PNG or JPG. But LinkedIn won’t display WebP in this context. I’ve reached out to them to bring attention to this issue.
