This post by the brilliant data protection expert Rowenna Fielding (she/her) should be compulsory reading for everyone.
This is how scams go down. These are the red flags to look for. And yes, all this will happen when you are vulnerable. The culprits will be extremely well-versed in manipulating you into trusting them. At which point you will let your guard down and stop noticing the red flags.
In Sweden, scams of this type increased by 60% in 2021 compared to 2020. Have not seen more recent numbers but I've heard security professionals in the media proclaim that Sweden is generally more vulnerable to digital crime due to our high level of digitalisation (when commenting the many recent DDoS attacks on Swedish public sector sites).
Which is essentially admitting that too little time is spent on protection, education and mitigation to keep people safe, while betting on "speedy innovation".
I'm ranting. Go read Rowenna's post.
