Please be advised: When you post black squares on social media with important hashtags such as George Floyd and Black Lives Matter this means that when people search for these hashtags the results are flooded with empty content. This makes it harder for the real reporting from the protests to be seen, and for black news outlets to reach their audience. Consider not using these hashtags for empty content.

It's also election day in nine states and black squares means that content about important events is now harder to find and will reach fewer people. Because it's all black squares.

This is not criticism, this is knowledge sharing. That needs to be spread further. I'm sure most people don't consider the potential negative outcomes of these types of actions. But it's now time to reflect and be critical. It's not entirely unlikely that the black squares campaign is fuelled by the alt-right.

[Update] Here is a blog post if you want to share this info: https://axbom.blog/black-squares
