This is the long read you should spend your Sunday on. Read it, go for a walk and spend time considering where some of your strongest beliefs come from.

Also, consider how news outlets report findings, how inspirational speakers use research studies to get their point across in a timely manner and how books build one upon the other, trusting that distant (often single) source of information now so widely accepted because it has been replicated in writing so many times over. And yet often not replicated in research.

One firm belief of mine I am re-evaluating today is that of ego depletion - I am sure others will follow. We are not forward thinkers if we do not allow our beliefs to be challenged.

I also appreciate how the author, Andrew Gelman, notes how social media has played a role in unveiling weaknesses in the field of psychology.

"When it comes to pointing out errors in published work, social media have been necessary. There just has been no reasonable alternative. Yes, it’s sometimes possible to publish peer-reviewed letters in journals criticizing published work, but it can be a huge amount of effort. Journals and authors often apply massive resistance to bury criticisms."

Once a research article is published it should not be taken as true. That's when it should start being challenged. Because that is the job of science.
