Just published: How Nir Eyal’s habit books are dangerous
Hired as a speaker throughout Silicon Valley and the international tech world, Nir Eyal’s appeal and influence cannot be ignored. He literally wrote the book that has helped many startups and corporations exploit human weaknesses for profit. He’d just rather they have good intentions.

I just want to clarify: I distinguish between person and outcomes of actions. I'm sure Nir Eyal is a great person with an abundance of positive intent. My default is to believe the best in people and I've not seen Eyal as personally harming others.
And to make finding it easier, here is the thread with my response to @StrDesign's excellent question:

"A little-discussed aspect of Facebook’s moderation was particularly distressing to the contractors: vetting private conversations between adults and minors that have been flagged by algorithms as likely sexual exploitation."

My blog post on Nir Eyal's books is now 2245 words... I think I need to stop writing and start editing. 😅

@z_rose 😱 This is the problem right here. ”I mean, what could possibly happen? Nothing’s ever happened to me.”
”Hundreds of computer servers worldwide that store patient X-rays and MRIs are so insecure that anyone with a web browser or a few lines of computer code can view patient records. One expert warned about it for years.”

@intrepidleeloo Yeah, @Cennydd has, and I'm now working as well on a blog post that definitely will.
@intrepidleeloo Not sure if you saw my full thread... Twitter seems to not mark them as clearly today... something's off.

@Cennydd @MrAlanCooper Oh wow, I feel a blog post ready to boil...

@MrAlanCooper @Cennydd You need to read my whole thread there ;)
Struggling to decide if I should buy the new book from someone who wrote the readily accessible recipe for coercing people into habits that are potentially detrimental to their well-being...
These are the very serious checks suggested by this person to avoid harm:
1) Do you BELIEVE it improves people's lives.
2) Are you okay with using it yourself?
That's it, that's the deterrent that will help you avoid harm. 🤯

Nothing on actually speaking to people, involving people who are regular victims of prejudice and mistreatment, or even maybe regularly listening for harm. Nothing.
If the white dudes believe it's all good and they're fine getting high on their own supply - go for it.
On second thought, I'm not struggling with that decision at all, am I...
Sorry for the quick rant. Got a bit upset is all.
The primary habit I'm interested in killing off is the corporate habit of screwing over customers.
This person wrote the book to help create the problems that the new book promises to help the victims of said problems relieve themselves of, because it's now up to them.
Well played professor.
Articulated really well by @Cennydd here:

@neeraj True. But also I don't think that's the definition of insanity ;)

@carriehd Agree 😊. As a kid I'm not sure I understood the concept of practice in that sense. Fall over, fall over, fall over, fall over, fall over, success!! It's kind of crazy how that works... I tried learning a unicycle a couple years back but my adult brain truly is my enemy...
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
Every time I see this quote I think how happy I am to be insane, or otherwise I would never have learned to ride a bicycle.
