@iamdavidobrien You should see me travelling. If I travel with my wife it's rare we've returned home with less than 20 books.
But some books are just a real hassle when it comes to getting hold of a physical copy.
And our stacks of books are somewhat of a challenge after we moved to a smaller place... đ

Oh how I hate DRM. Remind me to never buy a book via Apple Books again.
I am now downloading some titles I've previously bought. Some of them I've bought twice. And part of me is still feeling like I'm doing "something wrong". It's tragic how we ended up in this reality.
(The backstory for all this is that I gifted myself a Kobo e-reader from my company.)

@thatandromeda With you all the way. It was me toying with the idea that many consultants are very focused on saving minutes here and there as a way of selling their products and services.
"You can save millions in time with this new CMS that allows you to publish 30 seconds faster!"
If those simplistic arguments/calculations held up both ways then much of what the same consultants are advocating for when it comes to adopting AI would be "lost time", and hence lost money.
I wonder if anyone has calculated any estimates of "worktime lost" to playing around with language models during 2023.
And compared it to "worktime gained" through improved output.
On broader populations, not individuals, mind you.
Thoughts on organisations setting goals.
If an organisation sets these goals, what other goals might be necessary to complement with?
1) We create opportunities for customers/stakeholders to improve their wellbeing.
2) We support autonomous, informed choices. (internally and externally)
3) We use resources in a sensible, sustainable and compassionate manner.
4) We proactively listen to, and do a good
job of managing, feedback (internally and externally)
5) We invest in the long-term wellbeing of our workforce.

Sure. A decent amount of my writing has been on LinkedIn practices lately:
â using an abundance of emojis (can make it hard to read, and some have really long names read out by screen readers)
â using unicode fonts to simulate bold text (often not recognised by screen readers)
â putting links in comments (making it harder to reach and find for some people)
I get that everyone doesnât know what is good or bad for accessibility. What can frustrate me is that after I explain something is truly bad for accessibility, some people in my network choose to keep doing that very thing.
Even after theyâve âlikedâ my posts.
Which has to make one realise what a fucking battle it can be for people with disabilities to constantly have to advocate for their rights.
And of course even have them ignored by people with other types of disabilities who are busy advocating for different considerations.
Everybody is struggling. I just wish there was more space for keeping it simple and putting wellbeing ahead of illusive pizazz.

Remember how it was obvious that we build machines that adapt to human behaviors and needs?
Now look at the millions of humans changing and tweaking the way they write prompts when they don't get the output they expect. Adapting to the machines.
I'd laugh if it wasn't so sad.

Idag den 20 december Àr det presidentval i Demokratiska Republiken Kongo (DRK). Redan nÄgra timmar efter att röstandet inletts kom rapporter om protester och valfusk. Ska vi bry oss om det?
DRK Àr det nÀst största landet i Afrika, efter Algeriet. Det Àr till ytan lika stort som hela VÀsteuropa. Det rÄkar ocksÄ ha vÀrldens största reserv av grundÀmnet kobolt och vÀrldens nÀst största regnskog. Det Àr Àven vÀrldens tredje största kopparproducent.
Kobolt anvÀnds i de Äteruppladdningsbara litium-batterier vi Àr sÄ beroende av för vÄra mobiltelefoner, bÀrbara datorer, lÀsplattor. Och elbilar. Förra Äret producerade DRK 72 procent av vÀrldens kobolt. Som vÀrlden ser ut just nu behövs ett stÀndigt flöde av kobolt för att klara av den gröna omstÀllningen mot att överge fossila brÀnslen.
Regnskogen har blivit enormt viktig nÀr stora delar av vÀrlden Àgnat sig Ät avskogning. Framtiden för DRK:s regnskog spelar en allt viktigare roll för hela planetens vÀlmÄende.
Om inte det viktigaste landet, sÄ Àr nog DRK ett av vÀrldens viktigaste lÀnder just nu. Ett land som vi i Sverige fÄr vÀldigt fÄ nyheter om.
Trots dessa otroligt vitala tillgÄngar (som ocksÄ inkluderar olja, diamanter, tantal, tenn och guld) Àr DRK ett av vÀrldens fem fattigaste lÀnder och lider just nu av en rad vÀpnade konflikter, korruption och miljontals mÀnniskor pÄ flykt frÄn sina hem. Att en rad företag och verksamheter frÄn andra lÀnder etablerat sig dÀr för att exploatera rikedomarna och utnyttja kongolesernas fattigdom, samt unga befolkning, bör inte vara förvÄnande.
HÀlften av DRK:s befolkning pÄ 110 miljoner mÀnniskor Àr barn. MedianÄldern Àr 15,6 Är. MÄnga tusentals barn arbetar i landets gruvor för att bryta kobolt för hand*. Som anvÀnds i mina batteridrivna apparater.

Landets femte president, Félix Tshisekedi, söker nu en andra, och sista, mandatperiod. Olika valobservatörer pÄ plats vid valet 2018 menade att Tshisekedi egentligen förlorade till utmanaren Martin Fayulu. Under tiden valresultatet var ifrÄgasatt, i vÀntan pÄ domslut, sÄ stÀngde landet helt av all tillgÄng till internet, mellan 31 december 2018 och 20 januari 2019.
Men bĂ„de USA och EU valde trots denna information att backa Tshisekedi. âFör stabilitetens skull.â FrĂ„gan Ă€r: vems stabilitet? Och vad gör detta med förtroendet för demokrati?
I Ă„r stĂ€ller Fayulu upp igen som kandidat till posten, och kallas av sina anhĂ€ngare âden valda presidentenâ. Bland kandidaterna Ă„terfinns ocksĂ„ Denis Mukwege*. LĂ€karen Mukwege tog emot Nobels fredspris 2018 för sina anstrĂ€ngningar att stoppa anvĂ€ndningen av sexuellt vĂ„ld som vapen i krig och vĂ€pnade konflikter.
Det enda sÀttet att fÄ till förÀndring för kongoleserna Àr att fler pratar om deras villkor, och hur landets rikedomar kommer hela vÀrlden till godo.
