It’s ‘alternative text’. A way of describing the image to people who can not see the image, or have trouble understanding it.
In terms of accessibility it helps more people participate w/out barriers.

To see how others do it, tap an image on Bluesky to read the alt text that has been provided for that image. There’s a tiny ALT watermark bottom-right on images that have alt text.
