Totally. Interestingly we saw this on a huge scale with that open letter on pausing the development of AI. The first source in that letter was to the Stochastic Parrots paper by Timnit Gebru, Emily Bender, Margaret Mitchell et al. The paper concludes the complete opposite of what the letter used it as a support for expressing.
So yes, I would definitely agree that source linking doesn't confirm any support for the claims made in a text, but it does provide me with an opportunity to go deeper and draw my own conclusions. Granted, very few people will unfortunately do that. Many won't even check if the source even exists.
