@ojala Akkoma is just a much better piece of software in many ways. It started with me caring about performance for a 1-person instance, but there are other benefits as well.

Thank you Rachel! I agree many of us are aware but that we also tend to forget to regularly reason around the many implications of this situation. I’ve found that when I produce illustrative models I also encourage more people understand the inherent risks. I’m imagining, for example, that many users of LinkedIn don’t consider how they are ”talking” to the algorithm by liking, commenting, watching or even just ”hovering”(!) over someone else’s post.
I also use them in teaching of course, and it’s always fun to see how models trigger creative output when discussing them in educational settings.

Fair and valid point. The tool truesize.com only allows me to drag one country at a time so this was the fastest way I could get this type of image. But I will definitely consider this for the future.

Thanks, yes there are so many aspect to this to explore further. Had I been back at university I would likely have taken time to dive deeper in the whole subject area.
I wrote this post a while back using map projections as an example of how we often can draw the wrong conclusions because we insist on using outdated maps, or maps that were designed for a completely different purpose.

Okay, then I likely misunderstood – I thought this was about importing the accounts that follow you. In case we are talking about importing the accounts you yourself are following, Akkoma for example has an upload field for that in settings (upload follows from a csv file).

Några anledningar till att jag älskar Akkoma:
• Betydligt mindre resurskrävande än Mastodon om man har många följare och/eller följer många (tycks gälla såväl minne, processorkraft som lagring). Jag körde tidigare Mastodon och den segade ner min server väsentligt. Behöver inte sidekiq till exempel och lagrar inte ‘extern’ media lokalt. Färre beroenden.
• Mer community-driven utveckling (Mastodon är mycket mer en one-man show)
• Större flexibilitet (fler filformat, länkning av text, formattering av text)
• Bättre hantering av trådar (man ser svaren i hierarki och man ser - oftast - alla som svarat i en tråd)
• Har en inbyggd fritext-sökmotor… som också kan utökas med Meilisearch eller Elasticsearch - men blir då förstås mer minneskrävande
• Mer frihet (t.ex antal tecken i inlägg/profil, och styrning av frontend-utseende, kan göra listor även med personer man inte följer, m.m.)
• Har haft “quote-boost” hela tiden (inte för att jag använder det så mycket)
• Är en fork av Pleroma som släpptes lite innan Mastodon. Filosofin (mer som ett forum och med ett tänk kring lokala meddelanden) är lite annorlunda än Mastodon känner jag, som tycks hämta mycket inspiration från nuvarande Twitter.
Säkert kan @m lägga till några saker, som var den som först uppmuntrade mig att prova.

Sounds like you're asking if you can export followers and import them to a completely different account without migrating? As a security measure no software on the Fediverse supports this (not available in ActivityPub and hence also not in Mastodon). It would be rather unfortunate if people could be forced to follow new accounts simply through an import.

I know that when I've been in the US my accent becomes even more American and I get away with that there. I also know I'm sometimes a bit of a chameleon voice-wise. I switch a bit of accent and choice of words depending on context and where I am in the world.
Having lived in Africa for so long as a teen I know that my African English is different. So many culturally contextual things going on when I adapt to different surroundings and people. I can even switch to a *very* Swedish accent if I am talking English with many other swedes 😅
