Worth reading to the end: http://time.com/4457110/internet-trolls/
Most illuminating is perhaps what happens when there is an opportunity to listen to the trolls face-to-face, one-on-one.
The increasingly violent discourse is a real problem. I see many angry people online. We need to talk about it more. In schools, at home, with our friends. Internet is the fabric of modern society. How do we proceed when laws are insufficient or law enforcement is insufficiently trained?
What is this doing to our own behavior? How are we affected by seeing these things online? How are the norms for our online conversations changing? The answer is potentially pretty grim:
« Troll culture might be affecting the way nontrolls treat one another. A yet-to-be-published study by University of California, Irvine, professor Zeev Kain showed that when people were exposed to reports of good deeds on Facebook, they were 10% more likely to report doing good deeds that day. But the opposite is likely occurring as well. “One can see discourse norms shifting online, and they’re probably linked to behavior norms,” says Susan Benesch, founder of the Dangerous Speech Project and faculty associate at Harvard’s Internet and Society center. “When people think it’s increasingly O.K. to describe a group of people as subhuman or vermin, those same people are likely to think that it’s O.K. to hurt those people.” »

So Rusa and I were just reading that the Detroit Red Wings drafted 3 Swedes this year: http://redwings.nhl.com/club/m_news.htm?id=891135

So many angry people.
« Douglas, who is just 20 years old, failed to put her hand on her heart during the national anthem, and did not style her hair and/or face to every individual’s liking. For those “crimes,” she was widely criticized for being “disprespectful,” “unpatriotic” and “un-American,” and called words that we’d rather not repeat in this piece. Lochte and friends reportedly defiled a gas station restroom, fought with a security officer, lied to national news sources, and may have filed a false police report. And the four of them get to be framed as talented “kids” (reminder: Lochte is 32) having one debaucherous night of fun. »

In my passion for superheroes I can not help but love this toy.

We laugh nervously, wince or raise our eyebrows in shock, and yet similar things are happening in Europe - albeit not in such a mind-bogglingly candid manner. The media are having one field day after another with Trump and the like-minded politicians of Europe can get away with very little coverage.
« I checked with the embassies from other countries (long list) that Trump has insulted. None said they’ve received similar letters of apology from the U.S. citizenry. But folks in the diplomatic corps said they are often greeted by “I’m so sorry” from Americans they meet.
And they’re all working double-overtime, of course, trying to Trumpsplain for all their folks back home.
But come on, world. We know that plenty of y’all totally get what’s going on.
Back in Europe, my high school friend said that on many evenings, after a few more beverages are consumed, a reluctant European empathy unveils itself.
“Everyone I’ve spoken to also mentioned the same things happening in their countries. The rise of Marine Le Pen and the Front National in France, the anger against Angela Merkel in Germany,” Wulstein said. »

"När vi bygger akademiska discipliner och samhällsinstitutioner på antaganden om själviskhet förbiser vi de motiv som driver människor i många situationer.
Än värre är att man faktiskt kan slå ut deras tendens att vara snälla om man förväntar sig att de är själviska."
