I think it's important for more people to acknowledge that innovation can lead to both progress and regress.
Innovation can also lead to slow-down and stagnation, even if it does not lead us backwards.
When we understand that innovation is not always a net positive, society is in a better position to question the unfounded promises of tech overlords and politicians.
Innovation is not the same as boosted efficiency. And innovation is not the same as "better for everyone".
I believe a core challenge is a broad lack in ability to establish clear visions for ourselves and our communities, visions that would allow us to more easily recognise if we are moving in the desired direction. And if we are being helped or hindered in walking that path.
Instead we adopt the visions of far-away people who do not know us or understand our context. Helping them realise their vision at the expense of our own.

It is a strange world we live in now, wherein the output of a computer perfectly following its programming can be said to be "hallucinating" simply because its output does not match user expectations or wishes.
And across trusted professions, academia and media people are repeating that same word without question. Journalists, corporate leaders, scientists and IT experts are embracing, supporting and reinforcing this human self-deception.
In actuality a computer that outputs what the user does not want, wish or expect can only be due to one of two things: bad programming or a failure to communicate to the user how the software works.
As the deception is reinforced time and time again by well-respected technologists and scholars, efforts to help people understand how the software works become ever more challenging. And to the delight of anyone in a position of accountability, bad programming becomes undetectable.
I've been meaning to introduce ChatGPT to The Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. Here is my imagined result from that meeting. The Mad Hatter forces the algorithm into a never-ending loop:

Your view is that our environment does not affect our ability to prioritise?
I believe making conscious choices 24/7 is not within human ability, but we can structure our environment to help us make better choices, or (un)consciously structure it to make worse ones. These environments are structured/designed by ourselves and by others.
My intent is never to say that technology itself is to blame. But people use technology to influence each other. People are also influenced by the measurements and performance indicators placed upon them. These are often measured through technology, in the way that have we as humans have chosen to design the technology. Or other humans have chosen to design the technology that we are then expected to use in workplaces and societal contexts.
I don't believe adverse consequences are usually intended, but often difficult to walk back.

Yesterday I spent at least 2 hours sorting out my Microsoft account problems (same email address attached to a personal and a business account). Nothing is intuitive or coherent, not even changing the email for an account.
Microsoft also made me think I had to change my email MX records and switch to their email hosting in order to attach my domain name to my Teams account. Not true, I managed to do that without DNS changes (except for a simple TXT record).

When technology becomes faster it can also steal time from moments of value.
Imagine a computer taking 90 seconds to start up in the morning. You press the on switch and during the wait you naturally take a moment to exchange pleasantries with your colleagues, ask them about their families, hobbies or more immediate concerns. They reciprocate with a smile.
Fast forward two years and the same computer takes 7 seconds to start. You have barely enough time to sit down and adjust your seat.
Now thereâs no need to talk to your colleagues. No need to smile. Because technology has just saved you so much time. Almost 6 hours per year. Per employee
I guess someone somewhere is smiling.
