@Daojoan Do you maybe have this text as a blog post somewhere? I would love to be able to share it with more people. It’s painful in a recognizable way, which also makes it comforting. I see in words what I feel.
@Daojoan That’s bizarre!

The tragic garbage avalanche in the Philippines is a notable reminder that we are already living in the future of Idiocracy, a film that opens with The Great Garbage Avalanche of 2505.
Also… why is the floating Great Pacific Garbage Patch no longer in the news?
@grymt I offer this list of big tech alternatives 😊

@kolombiken När jag klickar faller hjärtan. Händer något om du skriver love i e-postrutan? (utan att skicka).

@grymt I think YouTube for me symbolises the polar opposite of what I love about the qualities of podcasting as it emerged: the open format (RSS) that allows free, decentralised distribution and freedom from surveillance. So directing people to a surveillance-ridden website (which I fully understand is often non-intentional) when recommending a ”podcast”, just shatters everything that I hoped podcasting would continue to be.
But yeah, I’m old and idealistic. And I do feel the same way for example about Spotify when it comes to podcasting.
@kolombiken Similar for me, though I use Pocket Casts.
I do think YouTube can very well be the biggest in terms of where people listen to ”podcasts” today. Which is part of what makes me sad. For me a podcast is not a podcast without the open distribution format (RSS). And the open distribution format is for me the strength of the format… where YouTube epitomises all of the very opposite qualities: like proprietary distribution and surveillance - collecting a vast amount of information on an individual basis.
The ones I’m thinking of do not share timestamps, but it’s I see the logic. Pocket Casts also allows sharing to a timestamp as well.
Something I see as evidence of a world gone awry… a person wants to share a link to a podcast episode and they decide that the best link to share is the one that leads to… wait for it… youtube. 🤯

@subhanqedirli Thank you 🙏
@subhanqedirli Thanks, the #fediverse infographic can be downloaded here in hi-res: https://axbom.com/fediverse
“Our dependence on U.S. tech has long been a problem, just one that many people in power did not want to touch because of how it would anger the United States. Even proposing basic tech regulations prompted rebukes from the U.S. government and threatened the prospect of investment from those digital colonizers. But that dependence left us without the tools to get a handle on key avenues for communication and commerce.”
"As our European allies have found first hand, our dependence on U.S. companies for cloud services creates a severe vulnerability, where the U.S. government can request whatever data it wants or can even shut off our access at a moment’s notice.”
"In far too many cases, our governments, universities, schools, and other public institutions—not to mention private businesses—are run on Microsoft or Google services. Now is the perfect time to get governments off Microsoft 365 and schools off Google Classroom by properly resourcing a new public agency or Crown corporation dedicated to building technology in the public interest.”
