In Ontario, an ”AI tool” being used to predict prisoners’ behavior. Its primary feature is disproportionately placing Black prisoners in maximum security. The whole point of ”AI” is often to maintain or even strengthen prejudice, while displacing blame onto something ”other” – that the public is made to think is computationally neutral.

Prejudice is cemented by humans through the complete process of interplay with the software, from ideation to creation to usage: selection, development, implementation, interpretation and action. And there is no such thing as seeing into the future.

”The program assigns each prisoner a score from 0 to 100 that determines whether they’ll be placed in minimum, medium, or maximum security detention.”

@LeoR1010 Exakt. 😔

Just as accurately as any generative ’AI’ detector, Instagram now automatically adds ”Likely made with AI” to images. The inherent false positives means legitimate artists are now ousted as not doing their own work. Using Meta products is truly a deal with the devil, as is using ’AI’ detector software. Layer upon layer of deceit weighing down on real talent. @davidrevoy https://framapiaf.org/@davidrevoy/116941001377913004

He did not say “I’m so sorry.” He did not say “Do you need anything?” Instead, he made a face, and in an instant, an aide came and whisked him away. Interestingly they are back on Hackerone now. Still with no bounty though.

@troed I believe @bagder summarises the issue I'm addressing rather well in this post about how curl gave up their bug bounty program.

One of the ironies in all this is of course that AI is an accelerator of both threats and defense at the same time.

But the specific issue in my visualization has to do with the onslaught of faulty bug reports.

As Daniel Stenberg writes: "The never-ending slop submissions take a serious mental toll to manage and sometimes also a long time to debunk. Time and energy that is completely wasted while also hampering our will to live."

I saw Linus Torvalds expressing concern over how ”AI-powered” bug hunters have made the Linux security mailing list unmanageable. So I sketched out a quick visualisation of this 😁

Bug reports before AI and after AI. Before AI the process was straightforward and simpe, a human found a bug they reported, this was evaluated/replicated and added to the backlog, later being patched/fixed. The human receives a thank you.

After AI, hundreds (if not thousands) people use the same AI software to find the same bug. They all assume they have found the bug and report it, along with all the other hundreds of reports of the same bug, and the ones the core team have already found (maybe even using the same sotware). It’s now a rush to triage this into all the hundreds of reports that have been seen before and already along in the process, things that are not actually bugs and then the ones that may be real bugs. The time to manage the real, new bugs is at an all-time low. It’s not hard to imagine that developers are resorting to vibe coding to fix the bugs.
