All my websites are down except my Fediverse instance (separate server, separate country). My VPS is hit by a catastrophic firmware bug in new disks and the provider is rolling back the system. No time estimate. Has been a while now.
While I’m waiting for this clusterf*ck to get sorted I built a status page for my websites –now allowing me to visit a web page to remind myself that all my websites are down. 😂

Huge soar in people searching for me and my content. I put a huge amount of time and effort into both of those happening. And all my websites have today been down and still are. Worst. Possible. Time. 😥

Websites are up again but the server backup that they restored was from 2 days ago, as I suspected. It's missing some changes I had made to a few posts.
Hopefully I can find other backups for those changes.
In the grand scheme of things my server issues are miniscule and I shouldn't let them get to me.

@samuel @zeank @konstellationen Ja den där balansgången med enkelhet är svår. Ibland när jag pratar Mastodon föreslår jag bara att ladda ner appen Mona eller Tusky. Att särskilja protokoll, plattform och app är oerhört svårt för de flesta.
Att Signal går att ha på desktop först efter att man installerat den på telefonen stökar till det för en del också.

Thanks, I'm familiar with these. Some services on these lists I wouldn't recommend, and often the lists are so long that people feel overwhelmed and don't do anything. Having only 2-3 recommended options per topic area can be helpful in certain contexts is my experience. Depends on trust of course.

There are some straightforward steps to take now. What follows is a suggested playbook for moving from Big Tech to small and/or Europe-based tech. I plan to keep adding to it.

First out is email.

Create your email account with
Posteo, in Germany (€1/month)
OR Proton, in Switzerland – not EU (free or ~€4/month)
OR Tuta, in Germany (free or ~€3/month)
For business email I recommend Migadu, in Switzerland – with servers in France.
During transition, forward email from your old account.
2/
Stop using Google Forms for data collection. Recommended for surveys and forms are:
Tally – a freemium, intuitive and self-funded form builder based in Belgium, and
Formbricks – a freemium open-source survey and form builder from Germany that you can self-host.
3/
If you’re not on top of secure messaging, make sure you have…
Signal (it’s very secure, so may behave a bit differently with syncing than you’re used to) - now has usernames.
And you may also want a secure account with the Matrix protocol using the Element app (allows threaded discussions).

There’s no need to use Microsoft Office for your documents. These two can open and save in Office formats:
Cryptpad – end-to-end encrypted and open-source collaboration suite.
LibreOffice – compatible with Microsoft Office/365 files and backed by a non-profit.

If you’re serious about discussion groups, don’t force your members into Meta-owned services. These require grit to set up but can better reflect your values and not exploit members:
Discourse – open-source, paid hosting ($20/month), or self-host.
myBB – PHP software for self-hosting.
